First published in 1930, amidst the collapse of socialist ideals and the onset of fascism throughout parts of Europe, Liberal Socialism is a powerful and timely document on the ethics of political action. During his confinement for his anti-fascist beliefs, the Italian political philosopher Carlo Rosselli (1899-1937) wrote this work not only as a critique of fascism, but also as an investigation into the history of Marxism and the need for a liberal reformulation of socialism. In this first English- language edition, Nadia Urbinati highlights both the historical and theoretical importance of Liberal Socialism, which continued to inspire the anti-fascist movement "Giustizia e Liberta." long after Rosselli's assassination by Mussolini's agents, and which outlines a possible rebirth of the socialist and democratic movements. Rosselli's analysis provides an illuminating interpretation of the ideological crisis of Marxism, in its positivistic version, during the late nineteenth century and exposes the intellectual weakness of revisionist efforts to delineate new versions of Marx's doctrine. He encourages readers to view socialism as an ethical ideal and to consider whether Marxist or liberal methods combine better with socialism to achieve that ideal. Rosselli opts for a liberal socialism that avoids the shortcomings of uncontrolled laissez-faire but favors state intervention to secure public services and social rights. All'inizio del terzo millennio, il pensiero politico occidentale si trova di fronte a due posizioni. Una parte dei suoi rappresentanti ritiene che la democrazia abbia sempre funzionato bene e che continuerà a funzionare bene in futuro, come modello da proporre all'intero pianeta. Un'altra parte, invece, ritiene che tale modello, pur avendo raggiunto grandi risultati nel migliorare il livello di vita e garantire i diritti, sia attualmente in difficoltà. Per due ragioni: perché i cittadini controllano poco e male il potere politico, e sono schiavi di quello economico (come dimostra la storia degli ultimi due secoli, sino alla crisi attuale); e perché i fattori razionali ne hanno emarginati altri, propri del nostro patrimonio collettivo (emozioni, archetipi, antichi saperi). Questo libro si colloca nella corrente di pensiero che sottolinea le difficoltà. Racconta come siamo giunti a una situazione critica, nel corso dei millenni, con uno sviluppo iniziato con Erodoto per giungere a Rawls, Bauman, e Beck. Questa situazione critica ci pone di fronte a un bivio, che il maggior politologo dello scorso secolo, lo statunitense Robert Dahl, pone in questi termini: la democrazia dei nostri successori non sarà quella dei nostri predecessori; cambierà comunque. O evolverà verso una maggiore partecipazione dei cittadini al controllo del potere (politico ed economico); o subirà una involuzione sempre più oligarchica, con il potere esercitato da esigue minoranze, sempre più ridotte.

Ya lo decía David Hume en el siglo XVIII: los animales son seres sintientes al igual que los humanos. Un axioma que confirmó Darwin décadas más tarde al afirmar que todos los seres vivos partimos de un antepasado común y estamos unidos en una única red. La semejanza entre las especies y la atención al sufrimiento impulsaron el surgimiento del animalismo y de los movimientos de defensa de animales ya en el siglo XIX. Durante los años 70, la publicación de «Liberación animal» de Peter Singer y las condenas a la explotación animal de Tom Regan y Gary Francione marcaron un ulterior punto de inflexión en la ética animal.
