Contemplada en perspectiva histórica, la cultura barroca, con todos sus acervos y experiencias, se ha visto relegada a un segundo plano, cuando no ha sido silenciada y ninguneada, en beneficio de la racionalidad científico-económica hegemónica en Europa. En este contexto, se hace necesario mostrar, desde una óptica amplia e integradora, los factores y procesos determinantes en la configuración del espacio cultural barroco en América Latina, valorando en su justa medida cómo ese mundo inventado, singular y único, ha terminado cristalizando un ethos transgresor y mestizo, alternativo a la modernidad dominante, irreductible al barroco ibérico y practicable todavía en el presente inmediato: el ethos barroco latinoamericano. ¿Es el ethos barroco latinoamericano una alternativa real para contrarrestar el avance de la actual crisis civilizatoria? Consumida por sus propias contradicciones e incongruencias hasta la extenuación, el nuevo malestar de la cultura y sus devastadores efectos sobre el ser humano y la naturaleza imprimen la necesidad de idear estrategias radicales de resistencia, es decir, estrategias de construcción del mundo de la vida donde el Barroco propiamente latinoamericano encuentre su sentido liberador.

A edição da Ubu conta com notas e uma introdução da tradutora, e o prólogo, a introdução e as notas que acompanham a versão do manuscrito de Ximénez traduzida para o espanhol pelo erudito guatemalteco Adrián Recinos. Grande conhecedor das culturas mesoamericanas, em sua introdução Recinos traz informações detalhadas sobre o Popol Vuh e seu entorno histórico e cultural. Há ainda um texto do arqueólogo Daniel Grecco Pacheco sobre o papel e a importância deste livro clássico. O volume é ilustrado por Francisco França. The Treatise of Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón is one of the most important surviving documents of early colonial Mexico. It was written in 1629 as an aid to Roman Catholic churchmen in their efforts to root out the vestiges of pre-Columbian Aztec religious beliefs and practices. For the student of Aztec religion and culture is a valuable source of information. Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón was born in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico, in the latter part of the sixteenth century. He attended the University of Mexico and later took holy orders. Sometime after he was assigned to the parish of Atenango, he began writing the Treatise for his fellow priests and church superiors to use as a guide in suppressing native "heresy." With great care and attention to detail Ruiz de Alarcón collected and recorded Aztec religious practices and incantations that had survived a century of Spanish domination (sometimes in his zeal extracting information from his informants through force and guile). He wrote down the incantations in Nahuatl and translated them into Spanish for his readers. He recorded rites for such everyday activities as woodcutting, traveling, hunting, fishing, farming, harvesting, fortune telling, lovemaking, and the curing of many diseases, from toothache to scorpion stings. Although Ruiz de Alarcón was scornful of native medical practices, we know now that in many aspects of medicine the Aztec curers were far ahead of their European counterparts.
