A relevância do presente livro justifica-se pela escassez de trabalhos que abordam a produção acadêmica na área da Etnomatemática, que vem sofrendo transformações ao longo dos anos no Brasil. Os eventos científicos em Etnomatemática, dentre eles, o Encontro de Etnomatemática do Rio de Janeiro (Etnomat-RJ), organizado pelo Grupo de Etnomatemática da UFF (Getuff), têm contribuído tanto para a área se pensar enquanto tal, quanto para seuprocesso de consolidação. Uma investigação do tipo estado da arte, como a que apresentamos neste livro, pode contribuir para aprofundar a compreensão sobre as tendências em Etnomatemática, assim como para identificar novas perspectivas, menos recorrentes, porém significativas. Desde o pensar as categorias dos eixos temáticos, até a capacidade de síntese e a dialogicidade necessárias para alcançar o objetivo geral, a prática de trabalho colaborativo permitiu aos componentes do Getuff instituírem-se sujeitos na elaboração das análises iniciais e como autores dos capítulos deste livro. Between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries Japan was totally isolated from the West by imperial decree. During that time, a unique brand of homegrown mathematics flourished, one that was completely uninfluenced by developments in Western mathematics. People from all walks of life--samurai, farmers, and merchants--inscribed a wide variety of geometry problems on wooden tablets called sangaku and hung them in Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines throughout Japan. Sacred Mathematics is the first book published in the West to fully examine this tantalizing--and incredibly beautiful--mathematical tradition. Fukagawa Hidetoshi and Tony Rothman present for the first time in English excerpts from the travel diary of a nineteenth-century Japanese mathematician, Yamaguchi Kanzan, who journeyed on foot throughout Japan to collect temple geometry problems. The authors set this fascinating travel narrative--and almost everything else that is known about temple geometry--within the broader cultural and historical context of the period. They explain the sacred and devotional aspects of sangaku, and reveal how Japanese folk mathematicians discovered many well-known theorems independently of mathematicians in the West--and in some cases much earlier. Mathematics is traditionally seen as the most neutral of disciplines, the furthest removed from the arguments and controversy of politics and social life. However, critical mathematics challenges these assumptions and actively attacks the idea that mathematics is pure, objective, and value?neutral. It argues that history, society, and politics have shaped mathematics—not only through its applications and uses but also through molding its concepts, methods, and even mathematical truth and proof, the very means of establishing truth. Critical mathematics education also attacks the neutrality of the teaching and learning of mathematics, showing how these are value?laden activities indissolubly linked to social and political life. Fractals are characterized by the repetition of similar patterns at ever-diminishing scales. Fractal geometry has emerged as one of the most exciting frontiers on the border between mathematics and information technology and can be seen in many of the swirling patterns produced by computer graphics. It has become a new tool for modeling in biology, geology, and other natural sciences. Anthropologists have observed that the patterns produced in different cultures can be characterized by specific design themes. In Europe and America, we often see cities laid out in a grid pattern of straight streets and right-angle corners. In contrast, traditional African settlements tend to use fractal structures-circles of circles of circular dwellings, rectangular walls enclosing ever-smaller rectangles, and streets in which broad avenues branch down to tiny footpaths with striking geometric repetition.
