At the beginning of 2022, a major EU enlargement seemed unlikely in the near future. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 fundamentally shifted the European Commission’s stance. Ukraine and Moldova were granted EU candidate status, and Georgia was added to the list of potential candidates. This raises questions about the future of the European Neighbourhood Policy. While EU enlargement has gained momentum, certain areas of integration have stalled, such as the expansion of the eurozone and the Schengen area - despite Croatia’s recent accession, Romania and Bulgaria remain in waiting. Meanwhile, new formats of continental cooperation, such as the European Political Community, launched in 2022, raise the question of whether more differentiated integration models will emerge. Additionally, the war in Ukraine has exacerbated other crises, including inflation, the energy crisis, food shortages in the Global South, and unprecedented refugee movements - not only from Ukraine but also other regions. Against this backdrop, the 14th Network Europe Conference examined EU enlargement prospects and the challenges facing European integration in times of global crisis. This publication features contributions from Fatlum Ademi, Antonina Bakardjieva Engelbrekt, Melita Carević, Jelena Ceranic Perisic, Viorel Cibotaru, Waltraud Hakenberg, Garine Hovsepian, Andreas Kellerhals, Lee McGowan, Henri Vogt and Ralph Weber. Network Europe was founded in 2003 by the Europa Institute at the University of Zurich with support from the Swiss government. It serves as a forum for scholarly exchange on legal and political aspects of European integration, bringing together researchers from across Europe.

With its “White Paper on the Future of Europe”, the European Commission initiated a debate on fundamental reforms of the Union’s structures in 2017. The paper outlined five reform scenarios, ranging from a reduction and refocusing of the EU’s competences to deeper integration in the spirit of a United States of Europe. However, the White Paper ultimately had no tangible impact, as none of the proposed scenarios were implemented. Nevertheless, current global challenges - including health crises, climate change, energy resource management, shifting global power dynamics, and related security issues - underscore the growing need for a strong and united Europe. The idea of an “ever closer union”, as enshrined in the preamble of the 1992 EU Treaty, could be experiencing a revival. Against this backdrop, the 13th Network Europe Conference examined the significance of the European integration project in times of global crisis. Discussions focused on key policy challenges, the EU’s relationships with its eastern and southern neighbors, and its role in relation to global actors such as China and Russia. The publication features contributions from Michael Ambühl, Jelena Ceranic Perisic, Viorel Cibotaru, Christelle Genoud, Christos V. Gortsos, Iris Goldner Lang, Nora Meier, Peter Christian Müller-Graff, Eva Pils, Clara Portela and Peter R. Rodrigues. Network Europe was founded in 2003 by the Europa Institute at the University of Zurich with support from the Swiss government. Current Challenges Of European Integration written by Andreas Kellerhals and has been published by buch & netz this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-24 with Law categories.

Crises have long been a recurring feature of European integration. In many cases, further steps toward integration have only been possible under the pressure of such crises. However, in recent years, the EU has faced multiple, overlapping crises, at times calling the integration process itself into question. In 2015, the eurozone crisis escalated to the point where, for the first time, a member state faced the possibility of exiting the eurozone. At the same time, the massive influx of refugees into the EU exposed significant shortcomings in both the Schengen area and the common asylum policy. Finally, the British referendum on 23 June 2016 resulted in a majority vote in favor of Brexit, marking the first-ever departure of a member state from the EU. Against this backdrop, the 12th Network Europe conference examined the numerous challenges facing the EU as well as potential future scenarios for European integration. The publication includes contributions from André S. Berne, Jelena Ceranic Perisic, Viorel Cibotaru, Alex de Ruyter, Ivana Kunda, Tobias Lock, Lee McGowan, Peter Christian Müller-Graff, Tatjana Muravska, and Attila Vincze. Network Europe was founded in 2003 by the Europa Institute at the University of Zurich with support from the Swiss government. The aim of this book is to highlight the relationship between the EU and the Western Balkan countries in light of their EU membership perspective and the impact that the EU Enlargement of Central and Eastern European countries at the beginning of the twenty first century has given to the Western Balkans. The book presents, in depth, the dual relationship between the EU and the Western Balkans. On the one hand it displays the continuous EU role in the Western Balkans, in particular in issues such as: the EU accession criteria; the EU approach and enlargement strategy; the visa liberalization process; the Stabilization and Association Process; the Stabilization and Association Agreements; instruments of financial assistance; the EU role in restoring and keeping peace and stability and in increasing the regional cooperation among the Western Balkans countries. On the other hand, it presents and analyses the progress the Western Balkans have achieved and the challenges faced such as: initially with the implementation of the bilateral Free Trade Agreements and then the regional Free Trade Agreement and the Stabilization and Association Agreements; nature and effects of these agreements in developing markets, in increasing trade exchanges among the Western Balkans countries; the progress each country has made toward lasting growth and in fulfilling the criteria of the EU integration process. The book reflects the regional approach of EU towards those countries while differentiating the individual progress in each country. This gives the book an interdisciplinary character. The latest enlargement experiences of the EU are used as a comparison for the current EU policy towards Western Balkans, while confirming a clear integration perspective for the region.

Against European Integration written by Ivan T. Berend and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-18 with Business & Economics categories.

This book gives a complex description and discussion of today’s populist attacks against the European Union (EU) following the financial crisis of 2008, which opened the floodgates of dissatisfaction, and the migration crisis which destabilized the traditional solidarity basis of the EU. The problem of Brexit is also explored. Each chapter presents one of the main elements of the crisis of the EU. These include West European populism, Central European right-wing populism in power, and the exploitation of the EU’s mistake during the migration crisis of the mid-2010s. These also include the discovery of Christian ideology against immigration and hidden anti-Semitic propaganda using a hysterical attack against the liberal billionaire philanthropist George Soros, and Brexit. There is a detailed discussion of the failures of the EU to pacify the neighbourhood in the South and North, especially in Ukraine, and the rising hostile outside enemies of the EU, including Russia and Turkey, bad relationships with Trump’s America, the uncertainty of NATO, and the emergence of a new rival, China, that enters into the Central European edge of the EU. The author explores strategies for coping with, and emerging from, this existential crisis and ends with the alternative plans and possibilities for the future of the eurozone. This will be an invaluable resource for understanding the crisis of the EU, one of the central questions of contemporary international politics for undergraduate and graduate students, and readers interested in the discussion surrounding an endangered European integration and difficult world politics.

International Relations A European Perspective written by Mario Telò and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-22 with Political Science categories.

International Relations: A European Perspective presents the main schools of international relations while underlining the added value of the European approach. Contrary to US or East Asian perspectives, a European viewpoint adopts a critical approach to traditional cleavages. The author demonstrates the added value of a European approach to international relations, taking into account both the shortcomings and achievements found within European history and current European unity. Key themes include: the evolution of state sovereignty, regional cooperation between previous enemies, political impact of economic integration, regimes building, international rule setting, institutionalization of international relations, and the weight of ideas and perceptions by transnational cooperation. This comprehensive assessment takes into consideration every school of international relations critically presented from this original perspective and as such makes the book ideal for courses on international relations.
