This book contributes to the literature on the EU’s role in the international system by engaging with the debates on global actorness and mapping new conceptual and theoretical avenues to better understand how agency and power are exerted at the global and regional levels, in a context of increased contestation of the international liberal order. Organised around three main lines, the book first looks at how the EU positions itself internationally in different policy areas, providing a multi-dimensional reading of EU policies, instruments, and practices; secondly, it engages with the EU’s own perspective toward its regional contexts and with the perspectives of regional actors on the EU; and, thirdly, it explores non-European perspectives on EU actorness, as the way the EU is perceived by others in this system of contested leadership is central to how it is understood in terms of policies, instruments, and overall capability to lead and act as a global power.

When trade, global warming, human rights, local conflicts - or indeed most of the major global issues - are reported the European Union is increasingly in evidence. It is clearly not a state, but in some respects it ranks with the USA as a force in world affairs. Europe has its policies, defends its interests and is urged to act; but what exactly does this mean? This text seeks to answer this question.

This volume analyses the European Union as an international actor, focusing on its role in peace and security. In an international context where the challenges to peace and security are diverse, including the current context of war in Ukraine, this volume theoretically contextualizes the EU in peace and security studies, explores the institutional dimension of its functioning, and interprets the narratives and policies this actor pursues. A set of illustrative case studies seeks to reflect on the dynamics of peace and security within the framework of the EU and its actions/interventions, such as in the Eastern Partnership or in relations with Russia, and in contexts such as growing disinformation or through its presence on a mission on the ground.

Based on the diverging interests of Germany and Poland as influential members of the European Union on the Eastern Partnership (EaP), the contributions in the anthology analyse specifics and current problems of the states in EU’s Eastern neighbourhood. By including the interests of Russia and the USA, which go beyond the EU, the geostrategic implications of these relations for the Eurasian region will also be highlighted. The studies of renowned German and Polish experts represent the results of individual research and bilateral exchange on the current state of EU’s relations towards its Eastern neighbours.

Through empirical analysis, consisting of five detailed case studies, including the CFSP and JHA frameworks, this book fills a distinct gap in the scholarship on European security and policy-making. As such, this book constitutes an important and original input in the debate on European security after the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.

The G7 Anti Globalism And The Governance Of Globalization written by Chiara Oldani and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-18 with Political Science categories.

The G7, a self-selected club of like-minded industrialized countries, looks at first glance ill-suited to address current anti-globalist concerns. Despite this, it has successfully confronted anti-globalization, populist and protectionist pressures by focussing on concerns surrounding the destruction of the natural environment, immigration, transnational crime, drugs, disease and terrorism, thus demonstrating the social and ecological advantages that globalization brings. Exploring how the world’s oldest informal summit institution continues to respond to rising anti-globalisation, populism and protectionism, this book investigates the contribution the G7 makes to global governance through its actions and accountability of its members. The expert contributors analyse from different perspectives the issues that have contributed to the rise of populism and protectionism, and how well the G7 has responded to them. Each contribution identifies avenues that might allow renewing and strengthening the role of the G7 in times of global change, with a view of strengthening its legitimacy and effectiveness. It will be of interest to policy makers, diplomats, scholars of international relations, international political economy, diplomacy, summitry and global governance. The issues discussed will also be particularly relevant to those working for civil society and non-governmental organizations seeking to participate in governance forums or to influence those who do.

The European Union (EU) has a hugely important effect on the way in which environmental policies are framed, designed and implemented in many parts of the world, but especially Europe. The new edition of this leading textbook provides a state-of-the-art analysis of the EU’s environmental policies. Comprising five parts, Environmental Policy in the EU covers the rapidly changing context in which EU environmental policies are made, the key actors who interact to co-produce them and the most salient dynamics of policy making, ranging from agenda setting and decision making, through to implementation and evaluation. Written by leading international experts, individual chapters examine how the EU is responding to a multitude of different challenges, including biodiversity loss, climate change, energy insecurity, and water and air pollution. They tease out the different ways in which the EU’s policies on these topics co-evolve with national and international environmental policies. In this systematically updated fourth edition, a wider array of learning features are employed to ensure that readers fully understand how EU environmental policies have developed over the last 50 years and how they are currently adapting to the rapidly evolving challenges of the twenty-first century, including the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an essential resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students studying environmental policy and politics, climate change, environmental law and EU politics more broadly.
