Eu Não Tenho Onde Morar fala de uma cidade criticada, às vezes mal amada, violentada e, imensamente irresistível: São Paulo. São Paulo, a cidade de trabalhadores, de cimento, de imigrantes, de operários, cidade industrial, agitada, que recebe levas de pessoas todos os dias, mereceu este estudo sociológico que revela um outro aspecto da cidade: as vilas operárias. A partir de histórias de vida contadas pelos próprios trabalhadores, de documentos políticos sobre o espaço urbano municipal, jornais operários, somados aos documentos vivos, a voz dos operários, dos empresários, construtores da indústria, vários meios de investigação; foram pesquisadas as relações que se estabeleceram entre o operariado, os empresários e o Estado, ao longo do processo de industrialização até os nossos dias. O estudo das vilas operárias mostra as raízes do passado, para se chegar às construções de hoje, mais sofisticadas. Em Eu Não Tenho Onde Morar, são expostos alguns exemplos de vilas, como a ¿Cidade de Deus¿, feita pelo Bradesco, a vila dos arredores de Taubaté, construída pela Volkswagen e a vila criada pela multinacional do vidro, a Cisper, ao lado de muitas outras que se distribuem na capital e pelo Brasil. Para se entender este livro, a autora retoma as Atas da Câmara Municipal, as lutas pelo domínio do solo urbano, os embriões de toda a política habitacional brasileira (incluindo o BNH), numa tentativa de demonstrar que, apesar de muitas nomenclaturas terem variado com o passar do tempo, o operário continua a enfrentar pressões semelhantes dentro de nosso mercado de trabalho capitalista.

Listening to Others is the first English-language volume dedicated solely to the vast corpus of the preeminent Brazilian director, Eduardo Coutinho (1933–2014). From his early work in the 1960s to his last, posthumous film in 2015, Coutinho transformed documentary filmmaking in Brazil and beyond. Described as an informal linguist and savage anthropologist, Coutinho filmed encounters with people different from himself that foregrounded their voices and his role as an attentive listener, creating a "cinema of listening." This collection brings together leading scholars of film, literature, visual culture, Brazilian studies, and Latin American studies, from the United States and Latin America, to examine both Coutinho's masterpieces and less studied films. Using a range of approaches, the contributors invite new ways of understanding the documentarian's trajectory and importance as his work transformed in response to dictatorship, democratization, and other political, social, and technological changes over the course of five decades. The volume also features original translations of a selection of Coutinho's writings and key texts by Brazilian critics to offer a historical perspective on his filmmaking and its reception.
