Pulling together themes from 20th-century theology, this text discusses how, from scripture, tradition and practice, the Lord's Supper is shown to epitomize the Christian vision of the final ends for the individual, the Church, human society and the entire cosmos. At the same time however, at the beginning of the 21st century, just as in the past, people are posing major questions about existence. The debate is contained within.

The Eucharist is preeminently the sacrament of Christian hope. It is a foretaste of the eschatological banquet. Saint Thomas Aquinas, in the antiphon for the Magnificat on the feast of Corpus Christi, described the Eucharist as the pledge of future glory. It contains within it the memorial of Christ's Passover and the anticipation of his coming in glory. Filled with hope, Christians celebrate the Eucharist as "a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us" in anticipation. (Sacrosanctum Concilium, par. 47). How this eschatological consciousness is related to the Eucharist is a question that deserves further exploration. While some authors have touched on the subject, there has been no systematic treatment of this theme since Geoffrey Wainwright's Eucharist and Eschatology. Our thesis explores the contemporary insights into Eucharistic eschatology of Hans Urs von Balthasar, Francois-Xavier Durrwell, Gustave Martelet, and Louis-Marie Chauvet. We shall situate our study in terms of a current philosophical-phenomenological context of hope as explored by Gabriel Marcel and Ernst Bloch, and the questions of gift as discussed in the works of Robyn Horner, Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Marion and David Power. To approach the Eucharist as the pledge of future glory is to discern the eschatological meaning of this sacrament and its relationship to Christian hope. If hope is essential to the human condition, then the Eucharist keeps hope alive within the Christian community and the world. As the sacrament of the Eschaton, the Eucharist activates hope in the present time for the consummation of God's purposes for all humanity and for the fulfilment of God's reign of justice, freedom and peace throughout creation. To celebrate the Eucharist is to participate in ...

More Than Communion written by Scott MacDougall and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-21 with Religion categories.

The dominant contemporary model for ecclesiology (theological views of the church itself) is the ecclesiology of communion. MacDougall argues that communion ecclesiologies are often marked by a problematic theological imagination of the future (eschatology). He argues further that, as a result, our ways of practising and being the church are not as robust as they might otherwise be. Re-imagining the church in the light of God's promised future, then, becomes a critical conceptual and practical task. MacDougall presents a detailed exploration of what communion ecclesiologies are and some of the problems they raise. He offers two case studies of such theologies by examining how distinguished theologians John Zizioulas and John Milbank understand the church and the future, how these combine in their work, and the conceptual and practical implications of their perspectives. He then offers an alternative theological view and demonstrates the effects that such a shift would have. In doing so, MacDougall offers a proposal for recovering the 'more' to communion and to ecclesiology to help us imagine a church that is not beyond the world (as in Zizioulas) or over against the world (as in Milbank), but in and for the world in love and service. This concept is worked out in conversation with systematic theologians such as Jürgen Moltmann, Wolfhart Pannenberg, and Johannes Baptist Metz, and by engaging with a theology of Christian practices currently being developed by practical theologians such as Dorothy C. Bass, Craig Dykstra, and those associated with their ongoing project. The potential for the church to become an agent of discipleship, love, and service can best be realised when the church anticipates God's promised perfection in the full communion between God and humanity, among human beings, within human persons, and between humanity and the rest of creation.

This book is designed to deepen our experience of the Eucharist, beginning with the central thought of Saint Irenaeus of Lyons that, Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist; and the Eucharist, in turn, confirms our way of thinking. The introductory chapter reflects on the reality of our Eucharistic imagination -- our way of thinking that links us to the mind of Christ, the mind of the Church and to each of us in the body of Christ, Early chapters examine the Eucharist as promoted in the New Testament by Paul and John. Later chapters discuss the characteristics of the Eucharist and a Eucharistic people: sacrifice, communion, judgment, praise, and love. Finally, the last chapter considers the Eucharist as a manifestation of the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Thomas Rausch, SJ, approaches his latest book with the conviction that one cant write about eschatology without also addressing issues involving Christology, soteriology, the mission of the church, and the liturgy. He faces squarely the question of what eschatology suggests about our salvation, both now and in the world to come.

Encountering Christ In The Eucharist written by Bruce T. Morrill and has been published by Paulist Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Religion categories.

If changes in the church's liturgical practice were the most obvious development of Vatican II to be noticed by the faithful in the pew, then inevitably, shifts in eucharistic theology were not far behind. The previous focus on Christ's presence in the sacrament itself under the species of bread and wine and the attendant forms of worship that this spawned have gradually yielded to deepening insights into the manifold ways in which Christ is present among the faithful. Drawing upon the best of recent biblical, historical, and theological sources, Bruce Morrill unfolds how the divine Spirit of Jesus works through ways Christ is present in the celebration of the Eucharist--in the assembly, presiding minister, biblical word, and ritual sacrament. Mindful of challenges inherent in eucharistic theologies within and among church traditions and communities, Morrill orients his theology on two key principles from Vatican II's Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: the celebration of the liturgy as participation in the paschal mystery, and the multiple bodily, symbolic ways Christ is present in the ritual celebration. In the process, he sheds new light on such topics as sacrifice, covenant, divine presence and absence, and the tradition's relationship to Judaism. There are some challenging implications here, not least to the modern tendency to think of liturgy in terms of a personal transaction--"what I got out of it"--and to those who hear God's word only according to their own preconceived ideas: "God's is not a reign limited to our personal histories," Morrill points out, "but, rather, is one that calls us to hear our story as part of one much larger, at times comforting, at others confronting us." Morrill eloquently invokes these human modes of Christ's presence to draw participants into the mystery of the cross and resurrection, into communion with the God whose love for humanity has been revealed unto death, making the Eucharist the source and summit for lives shaped in the pattern of Christ's justice and mercy for the life of the world. +

From the perspective of the Emmaus narrative in Luke 24, this study is a literary critical analysis of Jesus' table fellowship as an expression of the eschatological kingdom. The first time Jesus is recognized by faith as the crucified and now risen Messiah occurs at Emmaus through his teaching "on the road" and "in the breaking of the bread". Emmaus is the transition between the meals of Jesus and early Christian meals, setting the pattern of Christian worship as one of word and meal.
