Excerpt from Eulogy of Abraham Lincoln: Sixteenth President of the United States Dear Sir: At a meeting of the Committee of Arrangements, it was voted that we louder you our thanks for the Eulogy pronounced by you upon the late President of the United States, and, in accordance with another vote, and a general desire of the citizens of Saco to have the same published in pamphlet form for preservation and reference hereafter by the community, we request, if convenient and agreeable to yourself, a copy of the same for publication. Gentlemen: When on Monday, the 17th inst., you requested me to pronounce a eulogy of the late President of the United States, upon the 17th inst., the shortness of time and the great depression of feeling consequent upon the awful intelligence of his death, then just received, forcibly impressed me with the great embarrassment under which I should undertake the task. Nevertheless, as I then toll you, I did not feel at liberty to decline the request. If the sentiments by me expressed upon that occasion are in sympathy with the feelings of the community, as 1 trust they are, I shall cheerfully furnish you with a copy of the same for publication, trusting the circumstance under which they were produced will be considered some apology for their imperfect presentation. One still remains - its successful maintenance againt a formidable internal attempt to overthrow it. Such was the language Of President Lincoln in his first message to Congress. The third and last experiment, Of which he spoke, has been fairly and successfully tried. It has been demonstated to the world, to use again his prophetic words that those who can fairlycarry an election can also sup press a rebellion; that ballots are the rightful and peaceful successors of bullets; and that when ballots have fairly and constitutionally decided, there can be no successful appeal back to bullets; that there can be no successful appeal except to ballots themselves at succeeding elections. For the triumphant success of this grand experiment the nation is indebted to no one SO much as to Abraham Lincoln. I do not forget his wise counselors. I do not forget the'generals, who in this prolonged struggle have gained glory for them selves and for their country.
