History is one of the most important cultural tools to make sense of one’s situation, to establish identity, define otherness, and explain change. This is the first systematic scholarly study that analyses the complex relationship between history and religion, taking into account religious groups both as producers of historical narratives as well as distinct topics of historiography. Coming from different disciplines, the authors of this volume ask under which conditions and with what consequences religions are historicised. How do religious groups employ historical narratives in the construction of their identities? What are the biases and elisions of current analytical and descriptive frames in the History of Religion? The volume aims at initiating a comparative historiography of religion and combines disciplinary competences of Religious Studies and the History of Religion, Confessional Theologies, History, History of Science, and Literary Studies. By applying literary comparison and historical contextualization to those texts that have been used as central documents for histories of individual religions, their historiographic themes, tools and strategies are analysed. The comparative approach addresses circum-Mediterranean and European as well as Asian religious traditions from the first millennium BCE to the present and deals with topics such as the origins of religious historiography, the practices of writing and the transformation of narratives.

During the early modern period, regional specified compendia – which combine information on local moral and natural history, towns and fortifications with historiography, antiquarianism, images series or maps – gain a new agency in the production of knowledge. Via literary and aesthetic practices, the compilations construct a display of regional specified knowledge. In some cases this display of regional knowledge is presented as a display of a local cultural identity and is linked to early modern practices of comparing and classifying civilizations. At the core of the publication are compendia on the Americas which research has described as chorographies, encyclopeadias or – more recently – 'cultural encyclopaedias'. Studies on Asian and European encyclopeadias, universal histories and chorographies help to contextualize the American examples in the broader field of an early modern and transcultural knowledge production, which inherits and modifies the ancient and medieval tradition.

Der Band zeigt auf, dass daraus eine alpine Kulturlandschaft resultierte, die mit der Qualität des Sakralen behaftet schien: auf engstem Raum entstanden vielfältige kirchliche Heils- und Heilungsangebote, die Gottes wundertätiges Eingreifen ins irdische Geschehen zu einer alltäglichen Erfahrung werden ließen. Für die Menschen bedeutete dies ein Zugewinn an Handlungsoptionen, denn sie konnten aus diesen vielfältigen religiösen Angeboten jene auswählen, die ihnen zur Alltagsbewältigung in der alpinen Bergwelt am effizientesten erschienen. Indem deutlich wird, wie mit irdischen Mitteln (Kirchenbau, Ablassurkunden, Sachsakramentalien) das Sakrale in der Welt verankert und über Wunder erfahrbar gemacht, zugleich aber mit der Sakralität der Heilsvermittlung auch ausgesprochen profane Macht- und Geltungsansprüche der Kirche artikuliert werden konnten, leistet das Fallbeispiel der Drei Bünde einen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis jener Mechanismen, die die einzelnen katholischen Kultgemeinschaften in der Frühen Neuzeit - so unterschiedlich diese auch sein mochten - zu einer universalen Heils- und Kirchengemeinschaft verflochten.
