'The Future of the Euro' is an attempt by political economists to analyse the fundamental causes of the euro crisis, determine how it can be fixed, and consider what likely futures lie ahead for the currency. The book makes three interrelated arguments that emphasize the primacy of political over economic factors. It concludes that any successful long-term solution to the euro's predicament must start with the political foundations of markets.

Can the euro challenge the supremacy of the U.S. dollar as a global currency? From the time Europe’s joint money was born, many have predicted that it would soon achieve parity with the dollar or possibly even surpass it. In reality, however, the euro has remained firmly planted in the dollar’s shadow. The essays collected in this volume explain why. Because of America’s external deficits and looming foreign debt, the dollar can never be as dominant as it once was. But Europe’s money is unable to mount an effective challenge. The euro suffers from a number of critical structural deficiencies, including an anti-growth bias that is built into the institutions of the monetary union and an ambiguous governance structure that sows doubts among prospective users. As recent events have demonstrated, members of the euro zone remain vulnerable to financial crisis. Moreover, lacking a single voice, the bloc continues to punch below its weight in monetary diplomacy. The world seems headed toward a leaderless monetary order, with several currencies in contention but none clearly dominant. This collection distils the views of one of the world’s leading scholars in global currency, and will be of considerable interest to students and scholars of international finance and international political economy.

The advent of the euro was a revolution for the 340 million people who exchanged their former currencies – considered a fundamental element of national sovereignty – for this new single currency. Encouraged by some who believe that its introduction gives more cohesion and strength to Europe in an increasingly globalized economy, the euro is criticized by others who believe that the constraints it imposes are a source of austerity and favor northern European countries at the expense of countries in the south. The Future of the Euro Currency traces the evolution of the monetary policy which the European Central Bank instituted at a time when economic, monetary and financial crises were legion. The book presents, as objectively as possible, the advantages and disadvantages of this new currency, while considering the improvements that could promote its durability.

Europe is stumbling from crisis to crisis. The financial and debt crises are endangering the European currency union; referenda in several EU countries show widespread Euroscepticism; the economy is only slowly regaining momentum; unemployment remains high in many Member States; and the refugee crisis has deepened political divisions. We need an answer to the question of how to rescue the Euro and keep Europe together. In this volume, renowned German researchers and leading practitioners provide pragmatic recommendations. Their plea for a democratically legitimized Euro Finance Minister, a new economic approach, a common Eurozone budget, and minimum social standards are the prerequisites for a fair, stable, and prosperous Europe.

The Nobel Prize–winning economist and best-selling author explains why saving Europe may mean abandoning the euro. When Nobel Prize–winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz posed this question in the original edition of The Euro, he lent much-needed clarity to a global debate that continues to this day. The euro was supposed to unify Europe and promote prosperity; in fact, it has done just the opposite. To save the European project, the euro may have to be abandoned. Since 2010, many of the 19 countries of Europe that share the euro currency—the eurozone—have been rocked by debt crises and mired in lasting stagnation, and the divergence between stronger and weaker economies has accelerated. In The Euro, Joseph E. Stiglitz explains precisely why the eurozone has performed so poorly, so different from the expectations at its launch: at the core of the failure is the structure of the eurozone itself, the rules by which it is governed. Stiglitz reveals three potential paths forward: drastic structural reforms, not of the individual countries, but of the eurozone; a well-managed dissolution of the euro; or a bold new system dubbed the “flexible euro.” With trenchant analysis—and brand new material on Brexit—The Euro is urgent and timely reading.

The European MJnetary System (EMS) is perhaps the only success story of the Common Market since the First Enlargement. Its success, particul arly where the conmercial use of the EO] is concerned, has taken nost experts by surprise. So Irn. lch so, that when the author tried to recamEIld to his students a suitable and substantial w::>rk of study and/or reference about the experience of the EMS and its possible future evolution -- no book could be found. Thus, the author set out to write the present w::>rk. The author's aim is not to give a historical account of the EMS. Rather, the intention is to place the experience in a rrajor historical context wherein the System is seen an irrpJrtant transitional phase on the road to the ~lementation of a full economic and rronetary union (EMU). When examining the earlier plans for an EMU which Si3!N the light of day between 1969 and 1970 (already so long ago:) clear reasons emerge why the original six founder Member States of the EEx::: should have found it logical to embark upon the road to an EMU - "provided the political will to do so existed". Thus, they had beCOIre highly integrated and were conducting half their trade with each other. Then, there was the desire to integrate still further -- eventually leading (perhaps) to a political union.

A fact-based treatise on the Eurozone crisis, with analysis of possible solutions The Incomplete Currency is the only technical — yet accessible — analysis of the current Eurozone crisis from a global perspective. The discussion begins by explaining how the Euro's architecture, the relationship between finance and the real economy, and the functioning of the Eurosystem in general are all at the root of the current crisis, and then explores possible solutions rooted in fact, not theory. All topics are analysed and illustrated, making extensive use of examples, tables, and graphics, and the ideas presented are supported by data sets and their statistical elaborations throughout the book. An extensive digital component includes numerical simulations of public debt dynamics for different Eurozone countries, evaluations of the sustainability of programmes like the Fiscal Compact, and stress tests on the ability of institutions like the ESM to cope with major liquidity crises, and the spreadsheets used to calculate data in the book is provided for readers to access for themselves. The survival of the European monetary union has been questioned due to the accumulation of structural imbalances and the negative effects of the global financial crisis. This book lays out the full extent of the problem, explains what caused it, and provides possible solutions backed by extensive data. Dig down to the root of the Eurozone crisis Learn why austerity doesn't fix anything Understand how the Euro has changed economies Consider possible strategies for recovery In a macroeconomic context where the monetary policy is the prerogative of the European Central Bank and fiscal policy, hopeless austerity works against the economic recovery of the Eurozone countries. A positive attitude is difficult, but necessary. The Incomplete Currency is an insightful, important resource that guides readers toward real solutions.

2012 will be remembered as a turning point in the history of European integration. Somewhat reluctantly, after flirting for years with dangerous and probably unviable alternatives, Angela Merkel’s Germany seems to have made peace with the idea that that the only way to save the euro is to create a genuine European “political union”: the United States of Europe. Following Hollande’s election in France, the grip of neoliberalism and austerity on the continent is slowly but unrelentingly easing. A fiscal and monetary union cannot survive if it is not backed by a full-blown federal state capable of (partly) assuming the debts of individual nation states; of issuing eurobonds through a federal Treasury; of spearheading a radical reform of the international monetary system; and much more. Europe cannot surrender itself, and the world, to the overwhelming power of global finance: on the contrary, it should champion an international agreement to put an end to unregulated capital and financial flows. Tightly regulating financial traffic is nowadays as crucial as controlling air traffic. Moreover, Europe needs to rapidly develop an ambitious, continent-wide employment-enhancing strategy. The neoliberal policies thus pursued – based on the principle that first comes austerity, then growth – have proven to be a colossal failure. We have to go back to Keynes, who flipped the theory over: investments create savings, income and employment.
