Switzerland is often dismissed as a quaint anachronism, fated sooner or later to join top-down, large, supra-national organizations like the European Union. But Switzerland has been, throughout her history, a laboratory for self-government and individual liberty. Her unique status in Europe and in the world can offer valuable insights into how we can nurture freedom, encourage prosperity and preserve a proper set of checks and balances in political institutions. This book deals with these and many other issues. Its authors delve into subjects such as the nature of capitalism, the relevance of small states to preserve human liberty, the future of the welfare state, the consequences of financial regulation, among others. These essays were written in honour of Dr Tito Tettamanti on the occasion of his 85th birthday. A successful entrepreneur, Dr Tettamanti is also a man of letters, who has never grown tired of exploring the workings of a free society and the different dimensions of freedom. Economists, historians, businessmen, philosophers, and public intellectuals have contributed to this Festschrift to honour the man and his ideas. The result is an engaging journey through the history and the future of the free society. Individual freedom has profound roots in Switzerland and in Europe: in our political thought as well as in our political institutions. Its future, however, seems uncertain and faltering. This book provides food for thought for all those who care about it. ‘The primary task of this book is to build a bridge to a deeper understanding of Schiller himself who, along with Goethe and Novalis, was one of the great spiritual forerunners and trailblazers of anthroposophy.’ – Sergei O. Prokofieff Planned as the second volume in a trilogy on Novalis, Schiller and Goethe, Friedrich Schiller and the Future of Freedom is much more than a conventional biography. Prokofieff shines new light on Schiller’s character and destiny, helping to establish his position as a crucial antecedent to Rudolf Steiner in the spiritual history of humanity. He also defines Schiller’s task in the context of the achievements of Goethe and Novalis at the end of the eighteenth century, an extraordinary period that saw a seminal transformation in the philosophical and artistic landscape. Following the recent publication of The Riddle of Dmitri – which explores Schiller’s unfinished drama Demetrius – Prokofieff returns here to the theme in the framework of Schiller’s life and extensive body of work. In timely fashion, he conveys Schiller’s mediating role between Central and Eastern Europe, indicating how he came ‘near to the soul of the Russian people through an idealism imbued with his entirely self-created moral power and his fiery enthusiasm for everything in the world that is true, beautiful and good’.

With a Foreword by the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani. This book sheds light on the political dynamics within the EU member states and contributes to the discussions about Europe. Authors from all member states as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey assess how their country could get more involved in the European debate, taking the reader on a journey through various political landscapes and different views. The chapters cover issues ranging from a perceived lack of ambition at the periphery to a careful balancing act between diverse standpoints at the geographical centre. Yet, discussions share common features such as the anxiety regarding national sovereignty, the migration and border discourse, security concerns as well as the obvious need to regain trust and create policies that work. The book contributes vigorously to the debate about Europe in all capitals and every corner of the continent, because this is where its future will be decided.

Academic freedom and institutional autonomy are essential for universities to produce the research and teaching necessary to improve society and the human condition. Academic freedom and institutional autonomy are increasingly important components of the development of democracy. At the same time, these fundamental democratic values are subject to pressure in many countries. The relationship between academic freedom, institutional autonomy and democracy is fundamental: it is barely conceivable that they could exist in a society not based on democratic principles, and democracy is enriched when higher education institutions operate on this basis. Higher education institutions need to be imbued with democratic culture and that, in turn, helps to promote democratic values in the wider society. None of these issues are simple and the lines between legitimacy and illegitimacy are sometimes hard to discern, as is illustrated by perspectives from Europe, North America, Asia, Australia and the Mediterranean region.
