This book deals with air-ground aeronautical communications. The main goal is to give the reader a survey of the currently deployed, emerging and future communications systems dedicated to digital data communications between the aircraft and the ground, namely the data link. Those communication systems show specific properties relatively to those commonly used for terrestrial communications. In this book, the system architectures are more specifically considered from the access to the application layers as radio and physical functionalities have already been addressed in detail in others books. The first part is an introduction to aeronautical communications, their specific concepts, properties, requirements and terminology. The second part presents the currently used systems for air ground communications in continental and oceanic area. The third part enlightens the reader on the emerging and future communication systems and some leading research projects focused on this scope. Finally, before the conclusion, the fourth part gives several main challenges and research directions currently under investigation.

Addresses the Challenges of Modern-Day Air Traffic Air traffic control (ATC) directs aircraft in the sky and on the ground to safety, while the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) comprises all systems and phases that assist in aircraft departure and landing. The Aeronautical Telecommunications Network: Advances, Challenges, and Modeling focuses on the development of ATN and examines the role of the various systems that link aircraft with the ground. The book places special emphasis on ATC—introducing the modern ATC system from the perspective of the user and the developer—and provides a thorough understanding of the operating mechanism of the ATC system. It discusses the evolution of ATC, explaining its structure and how it works; includes design examples; and describes all subsystems of the ATC system. In addition, the book covers relevant tools, techniques, protocols, and architectures in ATN, including MIPv6, air traffic control (ATC), security of air traffic management (ATM), very-high-frequency (VHF) digital link (VDL), aeronautical radio and satellite communications, electromagnetic interference to aeronautical telecommunications, quality of service (QoS)-satisfied ATN routing mechanism speed dynamic environments, and service-oriented architecture (SOA)-based ATN transmission control algorithm. It also incorporates published research and technical reports to illustrate existing problems, highlight current methods and opportunities, and consider future directions and trends. The authors: Provide an overview of ATN Illustrate the composition of the ATC system Explain how to design an ATC system Reveal how to use an ATC system to control in-flight airplanes Present the results of author research on spatial mitigation Introduce the electromagnetic interference effects and response measures of aviation communications equipment Analyze the protective measures of aircraft and ground stations against electromagnetic interference The Aeronautical Telecommunications Network: Advances, Challenges, and Modeling highlights the advances, challenges, and modeling of ATN, and implements strategies for integrating existing and future data communications networks into a single internetwork serving the aeronautical industry. This book can aid readers in working to ensure the effective management of air traffic and airspace, and the safety of air transport.

Aspects Of International Cooperation In Air Traffic Management written by Walter Schwenk and has been published by Kluwer Law International B.V. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-01-01 with Law categories.

This volume discusses various institutional, legal and operational aspects related to the provision of air navigation services, taking particular consideration of the current implementation of a new generation of communications, navigation and surveillance systems for future air traffic management (CNS/ATM). The primary intent is to critically review the current mechanisms for international co-operation in this field. Particularly in Europe, many efforts have been undertaken to enhance air traffic management by harmonization and integration of national developments but many parties claim that these are still insufficient and the processes are still dominated by the individual States. Following a short description of the historical developments, the global framework of cooperation established through ICAO is described, supplemented with a description of some multilateral organizations active in the field of air traffic management on a regional basis. The basic technological and operational changes envisaged with the implementation of the Future Air Navigation Systems (FANS) are described and, based on these, related institutional and legal aspects are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to developments in Europe, where during the last four decades several initiatives for enhancing the cooperation of States could not overcome the fragmentation of the airspace. The decisions of February 1997 of the ECAC Ministers of Transport on an Institutional Strategy are reflected. One chapter is devoted to questions of liability in air traffic management which are of particular importance with regard to international cooperation.

First published in 1997, this volume responds to the increase in air traffic, as there has been a great deal of work by the nations of the world, under the auspices of ICAO, toward developing the concept for a future air navigation infrastructure to serve worldwide civil aviation efficiency. Even though the concept is well described and implementation is beginning, only technical manuals are available to advance the systems concept. This book describes the global vision for the Future Air Navigation System (FANS) and is the first text of its kind dedicated solely to Communications Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management and the CNS/ATM systems concept. In addition to the technical issues associated with CNS/ATM, the book also examines institutional, economic, labour and Human Factors issues. It is designed as a text usable in the classroom environment in universities and aviation technical schools.

Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of the structure, competence, and management of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) provides substantial and readily accessible information for lawyers, academics, and policymakers likely to have dealings with its activities and data. No other book gives such a clear, uncomplicated description of the organization’s role, its rules and how they are applied, its place in the framework of international law, or its relations with other organizations. The monograph proceeds logically from the organization’s genesis and historical development to the structure of its membership, its various organs and their mandates, its role in intergovernmental cooperation, and its interaction with decisions taken at the national level. Its competence, its financial management, and the nature and applicability of its data and publications are fully described. Systematic in presentation, this valuable time-saving resource offers the quickest, easiest way to acquire a sound understanding of the workings of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for all interested parties. Students and teachers of international law will find it especially valuable as an essential component of the rapidly growing and changing global legal milieu.
