This book explores how audiences in contemporary Europe engage with films from other European countries. It draws on admissions data, surveys, and focus group discussions from across the continent to explain why viewers are attracted to particular European films, nationalities, and genres, including action-adventures, family films, animations, biopics, period dramas, thrillers, comedies, contemporary drama, and romance. It also examines how these films are financed, produced, and distributed, how they represent Europe and other Europeans, and how they affect audiences. Case-studies range from mainstream movies like Skyfall, Taken, Asterix & Obelix: God Save Britannia, and Sammy’s Adventures: A Turtle’s Tale to more middlebrow and arthouse titles, such as The Lives of Others, Volver, Coco Before Chanel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Intouchables, The Angels’ Share, Ida, The Hunt, and Blue Is the Warmest Colour. The study shows that watching European films can sometimes improve people’s understandings of other countries and make them feel more European. However, this is limited by the strong preference for Anglo-American action-adventures that offer few insights into the realities of European life. While some popular European arthouse films explore a wider range of nationalities, social issues, and historical events, these mainly appeal to urban-dwelling graduates. They can also sometimes accentuate tensions between Europeans instead of bringing them together. The book discusses what these findings mean for the European film industry, audiovisual policy, and scholarship on transnational and European cinema. It also considers how surveys, focus groups, databases and other methods that go beyond traditional textual analysis can offer new insights into our understanding of film.

This book offers comparative studies of the production, content, distribution and reception of film and television drama in Europe. The collection brings together scholars from the humanities and social sciences to focus on how new developments are shaped by national and European policies and practices, and on the role of film and television in our everyday lives. The chapters explore key trends in transnational European film and television fiction, addressing issues of co-production and collaboration, and of how cultural products circulate across national borders. The chapters investigate how watching film and television from neighbouring countries can be regarded as a special kind of cultural encounter with the possibility of facilitating reflections on national differences within Europe and negotiations of what characterizes a national or a European identity respectively.

Cinema Audiences And Modernity written by Daniel Biltereyst and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03 with Performing Arts categories.

This book sheds new light on the cinema and modernity debate by confronting established theories on the role of the modern cinematic experience with new empirical work on the history of the social experience of cinema-going, film audiences and film exhibition. The book provides a wide range of research methodologies and perspectives on these matters, including: the use of oral history methods questionnaires diaries audience letters as well as industrial, sociological and other accounts on historical film audiences. The collection’s case studies thus provide a "how to" compendium of current methodologies for researchers and students working on film and media audiences, film and media experiences, and historical reception. The volume is part of a ‘new cinema history’ effort within film and screen studies to look at film history not only as a history of production, textual relations or movies-as-artefacts, but rather to concentrate more on the receiving end, the social experience of cinema, and the engagement of film/cinema (history) ‘from below’. The contributions to the volume reflect upon the very different ways in which cinema has been accepted, rejected or disciplined as an agent of modernity in neighbouring parts of Europe, and how cinema-going has been promoted and regulated as a popular social practice at different times in twentieth-century European history.

Cinematic Journeys written by Dimitris Eleftheriotis and has been published by Edinburgh University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-30 with Performing Arts categories.

Cinematic Journeys explores the interconnected histories, theories and aesthetics of mobile vision and cinematic movement. It traces the links between certain types of movement of/in the frame and broader cultural trends that have historically informed Western sensibilities. It contextualises that genealogy with detailed analysis of contemporary and recent 'travel films' as well as older works. The book investigates how movements of exploration, discovery and revelation are activated in specific cinematic narratives of travelling and displacement. Such narratives are analysed with attention to the mass population movements and displacements that form their referential background.Cinematic Journeys also examines the ways in which travelling affects film itself. Case studies focus on films as travelling commodities (with the popularity of Indian films in Greece in the 1950s and 60s as case study); and, through a study of subtitles, on the category of the 'foreign spectator' (who in the encounter with 'foreign' films moves across cultural borders).Films considered in the book include Sunrise, Slow Motion, Hukkle, Death in Venice, Voyage to Italy, The Motorcycle Diaries, Koktebel, Japon, Blackboards, Ulysses' Gaze, and the work of directors Tony Gatliff and Fatih Akin.

Master's Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Film Science, grade: 1,0, University of Edinburgh, 37 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Wim Wenders, one of the key figures of New German Cinema, a movement similar to the "Nouvelle Vague" in some ways, is of another generation than Fellini and Godard. In his film "Der Stand der Dinge" (1982) he literally commutes between the two poles of his filmmaking, Europe and the US. The film begins in Portugal, where a film crew is forced to stop shooting and ends at the place where all the great cinema myths arise, Hollywood. Wenders' film is an attempt by a young filmmaker to find a stable creative position in unstable times. (Wenders had just experienced great difficulties in making "Hammett" (1982) in the US). In "Der Stand der Dinge" this is exemplified by the direct inclusion of his own thoughts about European and American filmmaking, images and stories, and black-andwhite and colour film stock, opposites that are not harmoniously resolved at the end. Among the three films discussed Wenders' film within the film is the only one not completed, suggesting an unsure future for the cinema. In examining these three films, I shall focus on the following aspects: 6 - In what way does the film reflect on the history of motion pictures (references to it)? - What attitude does the filmmaker have concerning the artificial-illusionist elements of his profession/product? - How does the filmmaker deal with the narrative and filmic conventions of his profession? - What does the film tell us about the film director's artistic and working style. Does "life imitates art" in these films? - To which extent can autobiographic elements be found in these films and can any parallels between the director in the film and the director of the film be drawn? - How can the film be classified in the oeuvre of the director? Does it mark the end of one phase of his work and/or lead into a new one? - How is the "film within the fi
