Is EU citizenship compatible with European values? In the wake of the Convention on the Future of Europe, and against the backdrop of the many challenges facing the EU (security, economic, migration, health, climate, digital, etc.), this book aims to take stock of the scope and content of European citizenship and its capacity to embody the values of the Union. Seen as the culmination of a political project, EU citizenship is also regularly criticised as a mere market citizenship whose rights only benefit the mobile and wealthy. The first part of the book therefore focuses on assessing the values of the Union in the light of European citizenship (with an emphasis on dignity, equality, democracy and respect for human rights), while the second part analyses the ways in which European citizenship can truly embody the values of the Union. The aim is to rethink the Union’s capacity to ensure the effective dissemination of the values underlying the European social contract and to anchor them in a democratic project underpinned by European citizenship. This book is the result of an international academic conference held at the University of Lyon 3 at the end of 2023 and is part of the Jean Monnet Chair’s research project on the promotion and preservation of the values of the Union. It brings together contributions from Ninon Forster (Professor of Public Law, University of Valenciennes), Anastasia Iliopoulou (Professor of Public Law, University of Paris Pantheon Assas), Julie Rondu (Assistant Professor of Public Law, University of Strasbourg), Mathieu Rouy (PhD in EU law, Research fellow at EDIEC, Jean Moulin Lyon 3 University), Quitterie Roccaserra (Doctoral candidate, University Paris Pantheon Assas), Felicie Remlinger (Doctoral candidate, University Paris Pantheon Assas), Irene Marchioro (Postdoctoral researcher, University of Trieste), Michele Messina (Professor of Law, University of Messina) and Andrew Fagan (Senior Lecturer, University of Essex).”

New approaches to governance have attracted significant scholarly attention in recent years. Commentators on both sides of the Atlantic have identified, charted and evaluated the rise and spread of forms of governance, forms which seem to differ from previous regulatory and legal paradigms. In Europe, the emergence of the Open Method of Coordination has provided a focal point for new governance studies. In the US, scholarship on issues such as collaborative problem-solving, democratic experimentalism, and problem-solving courts exemplify the interest in similar developments. This book covers diverse policy sectors and subjects, including the environment, education, anti-discrimination, food safety and many others. While some chapters concentrate on the operation of new governance mechanisms in a federal and multilevel context and others look at the relationship between public and private mechanisms and settings, what all the contributors share in common is the pursuit of effective mechanisms for addressing complex social problems, and the challenges they raise for our understanding of law and constitutionalism, and of legal and constitutional values.

In an era of Covid 19, The Court of Justice of the European Union explores the extent to which the CJEU can realise a powerful role as guardian of the EU’s rule of law in a public health emergency. Drawing on an extensive literature review, The Court of Justice of the European Union argues the CJEU can realise such a role by anchoring a structured rule of law review in its reasoning when considering the exercise by the Member States of the public health derogation. Both the legal reasoning of the CJEU during the Covid 19 public health emergency and its aftermath, as well as the related challenges to the EU’s rule of law, are legally and politically of intense interest to legal academics, legal practitioners, policy makers and students.

Revising The Integration Citizenship Nexus In Europe written by Roxana Barbulescu and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-09 with Social Science categories.
This open access book critically re-examines the theoretical and empirical interconnections between integration and citizenship, specifically, naturalisation. With new, empirical-grounded analyses of what we term 'citizenship-integration nexus' the central, shared contribution is showcasing how membership is informally achieved through everyday integration —usually around, but sometimes in spite of, formal citizenship requirements. By providing evidence of a nexus disjuncture, the book contributes to critical dialogues on immigrant integration and political incorporation, relevant for policymakers, civil society actors, and academics alike.

European Solidarity Under Scrutiny written by Christopher Starke and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-15 with Social Science categories.
This book explores the processes through which European solidarity is constructed. More specifically, it investigates how the media's framing of European identity can facilitate and/or impede the emergence of European solidarity on the individual level. Through an online experiment that tested the effect of two different media identity frames on individual solidarity during the European debt crisis, the author argues that the exposure to news articles using a value-based identity frame boosts solidarity compared to an economic identity frame. This interdisciplinary work will be of interest to scholars of political sociology, political communication and political psychology, as well as any researchers who study European integration.

The Discursive Construction Of Migrant Identities written by Charlotte Taylor and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-01-23 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This edited volume explores how migrant identities are created and constructed in discourse both by migrants themselves and by others. The contributors reveal how migrant identities are discursively constructed by those with lived experiences of mobility and those who view themselves as part of the 'host' population. This dual focus responds to a lack of previous research examining migration representation from both perspectives. Readers will discover how the discursive constructions of migrant identities in different domains relate to one another. The case studies include a broad range of text types from film, government documents and narrative accounts to newspapers and Twitter. They also cover a wide range of contexts including Argentina, Australia, Italy, Romania, and UK, making this is a more comprehensive account of the framing of migration than has been previously accomplished. The chapters all follow the same structure to help the reader learn how to investigate migration discourses using qualitative and quantitative (critical) discourse analytic approaches.

Charting the path from intervention to integration Europe and the Post-Yugoslav Space examines the role of Europeanization on the development of the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo may have a shared history but their experiences, views and attitudes to European integration vary dramatically. Opinion within each state is often equally as keenly divided as to the benefits of active membership. The debate within each country and their comparative differences in approach provide fascinating case studies on the importance and relevance of the EU and the effectiveness of Europeanization. A wide range of contributors with significant experience gained within the EU as well as their country of origin use their expert understanding of the language and cultures of the countries concerned to provide detailed and rich insights into the troubled history and potential of the post-Yugoslav space.

Outsourcing The European Past written by Thomas Van de Putte and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-28 with History categories.
This book investigates the entanglement of memory and morality in an extended case study of the memory policy of the European Commission between 2014 and 2020. The main empirical aim is to provide an understanding of how the European Commission, various non-governmental intermediary institutions (including the Memory Studies Association and Euroclio) and, in the end, participants in policy projects, attribute meaning to the past and connect that past with specific norms and values. The book queries how the European Commission turns more general cultural memories into concrete moral discourses in its memory policy; how these policies are institutionally operationalised; what draws these institutions to the European Commission’s memory policy; and what happens when individual citizens are exposed to the outcomes of those policy projects. Theoretically, Outsourcing the European Past integrates theories from cultural sociology, political science, cultural studies and sociolinguistics in an innovative theory of memory.
