This book examines the language policies relating to linguistic rights in European Union law and in the constitutions and legal statutes of some European Union member states. In recent years, the European Union has seen an increase in claims for language recognition by minority groups representing a considerable population (such as Catalan in Spain and Welsh in the UK). Additionally, there is a developing situation surrounding the official use of English within the European Union in the aftermath of the Brexit vote. In light of these two contexts, this book focuses on the degree of legal protection afforded to linguistic groups in the European Union. It will be of interest to students and scholars of language policy, EU law, minority languages and sociolinguistics.

Understanding The European Constitution written by Clive H. Church and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-11-16 with Political Science categories.

The European Union is now entering a crucial phase as the ratification process accelerates and key debates and referenda take place in existing and potentially new member states. The Union’s Constitutional treaty is often cast as either a blueprint for a centralized and protectionist super-state or as the triumph of Anglo-Saxon economics. Yet it has been little read, particularly in the United Kingdom. This book puts this right by publishing the full text of the crucial first part of the document and showing that it does not justify either of the extreme interpretations imposed on it. Written by two experts of the treaties, Understanding the European Constitution sets the Constitutional Treaty in context, examining its main themes and content and considering the implications of any rejection. It does this in uncomplicated language and with the help of explanatory tables and a glossary. Those who wish to make a considered verdict on the basis of the facts will find it invaluable.

The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages has been in force since 1998, but in France it has caused a heated debate and it has not been ratified. The questions raised include: should French regional languages be afforded protection? Is there a danger that their protection could lead to an assertion of regional identity that could threaten the cohesiveness of the state? Is there a threat to the official language? Can applying the principles of the charter, without going through the ratification process, effectively protect regional or minority languages? This colloquy sought to provide answers to these questions.

Understanding The European Constitution written by Werner Weidenfeld and has been published by Verlag Bertelsmann Stiftung this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-30 with Political Science categories.

The purpose of the European Constitution is to make the European Union more democratic and more accessible to its citizens, and to enable it to function more effectively. The burgeoning EU is no longer governable through the Treaties as they stand. Yet the document that politicians have hailed as "historic" is needlessly complicated, and virtually incomprehensible to ordinary people. This was one of the main reasons why the citizens of France and the Netherlands rejected the Constitution in their referenda. The European Constitution marks the starting point for a renewed debate about Europe. This book makes it easier to understand both the Constitution and the EU in general. Using accessible language, it guides the reader through the complicated subject matter step by step. Concise tables explain the genesis of the Constitution, its structure, the changes that it will bring about, and how decisions in the EU will be made in the years to come. Those who wish to play a part in shaping the future of Europe need to be familiar with the basic foundations of the European Union, and this demands an understanding of the European Constitution.

After the accession of ten new member-states in 2004, the number of official EU languages increased from eleven to twenty. In 2005, the Council of the European Union decided to expand the existing legal framework for Irish and for other languages, such as Basque, Catalan and Galician, which are official in all or part of the territory of a given member-state. On 1 January 2007 Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU, increasing the number of official EU languages still further. This book addresses the challenge of respecting linguistic diversity within the EU and is intended as an introduction to the issue for those not already familiar with EU law. It also provides an analysis of the potential of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union to enhance respect for linguistic diversity. Each chapter has been written by a recognised expert in the field. The appendices bring together the basic legal norms relating to linguistic diversity within EU institutions.
