This book accompanies the opening of the V&A's newly redesigned Europe gallery, which features spectacular paintings, sculpture, furniture, and decorative arts--textiles, fashion, ceramics, glass, metalwork, prints, and books--created by Europe's finest artists and craftsmen of the 17th and 18th centuries for the period's most important tastemakers, among them Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, and Catherine the Great. Outstanding art and domestic objects are discussed within their original contexts to highlight the rhythms and rituals of life during this period. Lavishly illustrated, the book includes essays explaining the grandeur of court interiors--for which the larger and more elaborate art objects were made--as well as discussion of more-humble period rooms and intimate interiors.

A Renaissance Treasury written by Laurie Winters and has been published by Hudson Hills this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Architecture categories.

Winters introduces Richard Flagg and Erma Flagg's collection of some hundred objects made during 1450 to 1900. Most of the beautifully crafted, highly decorative, yet functional pieces are examples of Renaissance and Baroque marvels; they include clocks (a particularly varied and sumptuaous collection), sculpture, inlaid boxes, china and glassware, tankards, metalwork, and furniture. Each of the 77 individual chefs-d'oeuvres documented in this catalog, celebrating the gift of the Flaggs to the Milwaukee Art Museum, are exceptional examples of artisty combined with technical achievement. Such is the case with a 15th-century Cassone from Florence replete with intarsia and coat of arms, signaling a marital alliance between the nobility. Another magnificent piece, highlighted through an individual entry in the catalog, is a 15th-century limestone tympanum, possibly from the Burgundy region of France, showing the enthroned Virgin and Child. The physical properties of this volume are as elaborate as the objects it defines; lavish full-page color plates illustrate the pieces, lengthy catalog entries provide detailed information, and the whole is supplemented with appendixes consisting of checklist and glossary. 69 colour & 29 b/w illustrations

Spanning three centuries of creativity, from the High Renaissance to the Industrial Revolution, this volume in The Met’s How to Read series provides a peek into daily lives across Europe—from England, Spain, and France to Germany, Denmark, and Russia. Featuring 40 exemplary objects, including furniture, tableware, utilitarian items, articles of personal adornment, devotional objects, and display pieces, this publication covers many aspects of European society and lifestyles, from the modest to the fabulously wealthy. The book considers the contributions of renowned masters, such as the Dutch cabinetmaker Jan van Mekeren and the Italian goldsmith Andrea Boucheron, as well as talented amateurs, among them the anonymous young Englishwoman who embroidered an enchanting chest with scenes from the Story of Esther. The works selected include both masterpieces and less familiar examples, some of them previously unpublished, and are discussed not only in light of their art-historical importance but also with regard to the social issues relevant to each, such as the impact of colonial slavery or the changing status of women artists.

Art Market Research written by Tom McNulty and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-27 with Art categories.

This book is for art market researchers at all levels. A brief overview of the global art market and its major stakeholders precedes an analysis of the various sales venues (auction, commercial gallery, etc.). Library research skills are reviewed, and advanced methods are explored in a chapter devoted to basic market research. Because the monetary value of artwork cannot be established without reference to the aesthetic qualities and art historical significance of our subject works, two substantial chapters detail the processes involved in researching and documenting the fine and decorative arts, respectively, and provide annotated bibliographies. Methods for assigning values for art objects are explored, and sources of price data, both in print and online, are identified and described in detail. In recent years, art historical scholarship increasingly has addressed issues related to the history of art and its markets: a chapter on resources for the historian of the art market offers a wide range of sources. Finally, provenance and art law are discussed, with particular reference to their relevance to dealers, collectors, artists and other art market stakeholders.
