First published in 1971, this collection of fourteen contemporaneous European research studies on managerial backgrounds and on the patterns, roles, and evolution of managerial careers examine managerial motivations in a broader context than the traditional analysis of psychological qualities. Most of the studies suggest or demonstrate the usefulness of a typology of industrial leaders — whether constructed from individual characteristics, the characteristics of the firm or the characteristics of the economy as a whole — that avoids isolating industrial executives from outside factors. This book will be of interest to students of business, sociology and industrial history.

'Management and Labour in Europe is virtually without peer in that it brings much of the latest literature in industrial relations and management studies to bear on the subject of how institutions at the micro level shape the political economy. I view it as essential reading for scholars of comparative political economy and European politics.' - Peter A. Hall, Harvard University, US 'Everywhere in the book, one gets the feeling of an authoritative grasp of facts, figures and meanings, but everything is placed in the proper context and has been weighted in relation to competing or complementary findings. . . . despite the complexity and richness of findings taken on board, I found that the text is easy and compelling to read.' - Arndt Sorge, Organization Studies

This book examines the mechanisms and channels through which American managerial know-how and US management models were transferred to Europe after 1945, as well as the actual influence on European industries, companies and regions in the 1950s and 1960s. It explores the role of the European Productivity Agency, business leaders, US multinationals, regional networks and institutions, as well as the actual transfer process and potential political, cultural and institutional barriers. The final section contains the cases of three European companies which adopted American Management methods to a considerable extent during the 1950s and 1960s.

“He who stops getting better has stopped being good. ” Hans Schneider, General Manager of the Siemens Amberg Electronics Factory, Industrial Excellence Award overall winner 2007 There is a general perception that inflexible labor markets and high labor costs are contributing to a massive displacement of manufacturing jobs and investment from Western Europe to Eastern Europe and Asia. The debate in Western Europe is highly charged, but sometimes ill-informed. It is true that some low-skilled jobs are moving into low labor cost countries. On the other hand, many more highly skilled jobs are actually being created in the highly developed countries. The total impact on Western economies is much more complicated, and there is some evidence of important benefits. In this book, we showcase examples of excellent industrial management that has managed to create substantial job growth in manufacturing. This book is based on 14 years’ observation of the Industrial Excellence Award (IEA) in Germany and France, the first ten years of which we summarized in our previous book, Industrial Excellence (Springer 2003), and on an additional five years of obser- tion between 2002 and 2007. We have seen that management’s first and noble responsibility to society is to achieve competitiveness. Competitive organizations create growth and jobs, even in Western Europe. Competitiveness requires clearly articulated strategic positioning, together with excellent execution, and mobili- tion of all employees to apply their abilities and to pull in one direction.
