In der Hoffnung, dass Norwegen neutral bleiben würde, schickten sie ihren Sohn im Oktober 1939 zu unbekannten Menschen in ein fremdes Land. Für den neunjährigen Edgar war die von der Nansenhilfe organisierte Reise aus Bratislava ins »Land der Wikinger« zunächst ein Abenteuer. Doch im April 1940 besetzte die deutsche Wehrmacht Norwegen. Nur vereinzelt wurde öffentlich gegen die antijüdischen Maß nahmen der Marionettenregierung unter Vidkun Quisling protestiert. 772 jüdische Männer, Frauen und Kinder wurden im Oktober und November 1942 von ihren norwegischen Landsleuten festgenommen. Schiffe der deutschen Kriegsmarine brachten sie über die Ostsee. Die Transporte führten über Stettin mit dem Zug weiter nach Auschwitz. Dennoch gab es auch in Norwegen couragierte Menschen, die sich der mörderischen Politik widersetzten. Trotz des Risikos – auf Fluchthilfe stand die Todesstrafe – halfen sie den Bedrohten beim »Untertauchen« und der Flucht außer Landes. So konnten mehr als 1000 jüdische Menschen überleben, unter ihnen Edgar Brichta aus der Slowakei. Erstmals werden in diesem Buch sechs bewegende und in Deutschland nicht bekannte Geschichten aus Norwegen präsentiert. Sie erzählen von entschlossenem Handeln, Mitmenschlichkeit und dem Mut zum Überleben unter dramatischen Bedingungen.
