Explores and brings together the existent body of knowledge on building performance analysis Shortlisted in the CIBSE 2020 Building Performance Awards Building performance is an important yet surprisingly complex concept. This book presents a comprehensive and systematic overview of the subject. It provides a working definition of building performance, and an in-depth discussion of the role building performance plays throughout the building life cycle. The book also explores the perspectives of various stakeholders, the functions of buildings, performance requirements, performance quantification (both predicted and measured), criteria for success, and the challenges of using performance analysis in practice. Building Performance Analysis starts by introducing the subject of building performance: its key terms, definitions, history, and challenges. It then develops a theoretical foundation for the subject, explores the complexity of performance assessment, and the way that performance analysis impacts on actual buildings. In doing so, it attempts to answer the following questions: What is building performance? How can building performance be measured and analyzed? How does the analysis of building performance guide the improvement of buildings? And what can the building domain learn from the way performance is handled in other disciplines? Assembles the current body of knowledge on building performance analysis in one unique resource Offers deep insights into the complexity of using building performance analysis throughout the entire building life cycle, including design, operation and management Contributes an emergent theory of building performance and its analysis Building Performance Analysis will appeal to the building science community, both from industry and academia. It specifically targets advanced students in architectural engineering, building services design, building performance simulation and similar fields who hold an interest in ensuring that buildings meet the needs of their stakeholders.

This book started life as a successor to Sustainable Architecture, published in 2007, which set out to prove that sustainable architecture can indeed both ‘lift the spirit’ as well as save the planet. This fully revised edition seeks to take a step further, exploring how sustainable buildings are occupied and work, and sheds light on the methods used to observe this. Through short essays from thought-leaders and case studies of visually stunning, environmentally ground-breaking projects, Better Buildings provides architects with the inspiration and tools they need to deliver sustainable design.

This International Conference is about sustainability in its wider sense. It is an important area of discourse, as it pertains to how we work and how we lead our lives while considering the lives and workplaces of future generations. The conference particularly sets out to explore some of the developments and challenges taking place in academia and industry in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The conference is entitled "Going north for sustainability". The North signifies progress in technology, education and other areas of human endeavour to many people. Progress requires that people learn across continents and cultures.

Evaluating Operational Energy Use At The Design Stage written by Julie Godfroy and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with Energy consumption categories.
The climate emergency is driving a requirement to deliver highly performing buildings, with operational energy use consistent with net zero targets. To deliver this, design teams need access to tools and techniques that can reliably model in-use energy performance based on design proposals, and that can help inform design proposals. Built environment clients are increasingly interested in the operational energy performance of the buildings that they invest in, procure, or occupy. This can lead to targets being set in the project brief to achieve energy performance in line with the design estimates. As a result, building services engineers and energy consultants are being asked to provide estimates of the likely operational energy performance of buildings at the design stage, and accordingly to inform the design proposals. This document aims to help building services engineers and energy modellers to respond to this request in a robust way.

The 28th EG-ICE International Workshop 2021 brings together international experts working at the interface between advanced computing and modern engineering challenges. Many engineering tasks require open-world resolutions to support multi-actor collaboration, coping with approximate models, providing effective engineer-computer interaction, search in multi-dimensional solution spaces, accommodating uncertainty, including specialist domain knowledge, performing sensor-data interpretation and dealing with incomplete knowledge. While results from computer science provide much initial support for resolution, adaptation is unavoidable and most importantly, feedback from addressing engineering challenges drives fundamental computer-science research. Competence and knowledge transfer goes both ways.

Energy performance feedback is an essential tool in addressing the current climate crisis. However, this is not simply another theoretical text about energy performance in buildings. This book is for anyone who wants to better understand how energy is used in buildings, and how to drive down operational energy use – whether you’re an architect, student, client, building services engineer, contractor, building operator or other stakeholder. Focusing on evidence from feedback on buildings in use, it explains what it takes to get them to perform as expected, as well as the reasons why they often fail. Energy, People, Buildings draws extensively on the findings of studies, UK government-funded building performance evaluations and on original research into seven case studies from across the UK and abroad that have achieved exemplary energy use through building performance feedback. Providing a clear roadmap to understanding aspects that impact building users’ comfort and satisfaction, it also outlines the factors behind energy use and how to track it across the life of a project to ensure that your building performs as intended. Case studies include: the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool; Rocky Mountain Institute Innovation Center, Colorado; and Carrowbreck Meadow, Norwich. Featured architects: AHMM, AHR, Architype, Hamson Barron Smith, Haworth Tompkins, Henning Larsen Architects and ZGF Architects.
