This volume provides a framework for evaluating geospatial software for participatory mapping. The evaluation is based on ten key indicators: ethics, cost, technical level, inclusiveness, data accuracy, data privacy, analytical capacity, visualization capacity, openness, and accessibility (i.e., mobile friendly or offline capabilities). Each application is evaluated by a user and cross analyzed with specific case studies of the software’s real-world application. This framework does not discriminate against assessing volunteered geographic information (VGI) applications, as a form of participatory mapping, in circumstances that its application is spearheaded by underrepresented groups with the intent to empower and spark political or behavioral change within formal and informal institutions. Each chapter follows a strict template to ensure that the information within the volume can be updated periodically to match the ever-changing technological environment. The book covers ten different mapping applications with the goal of creating a comparative evaluation framework that can be easily interpreted by convening institutions and novice users. This will also help identify gaps in software for participatory mapping which will help to inform application development in the future and updates to current geospatial software.

The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and encompasses 99% of its habitable volume, yet is largely unexplored. However, new technologies, approaches, and a growing recognition of the ocean’s role in sustaining the health, wealth, and security of modern society has spurred a rapid acceleration in ocean exploration and discovery. Past ocean exploration efforts have fundamentally impacted our view of the bounds of life on the planet, the human-ocean relationship, and the Earth’s inner workings, and many more discoveries yet remain. The varied stakeholders for ocean exploration are exemplified in many of the UN Ocean Decade challenges that require generating baseline knowledge to expose ocean regions and processes not yet constrained. As more of the deep ocean is explored, we gain important insight into scientifically and societally relevant questions including the distribution of ocean organisms and ecosystems, seafloor mineralization, chemical cycling, and the role of the oceans in global climate. Ocean exploration benefits from deep integration across disciplinary boundaries and careful coordination between stakeholders and explorers. This volume brings together scientists, engineers, and educators across disciplinary boundaries towards the common goal of mapping and characterizing unknown parts of the ocean. To meet the tremendous challenge of exploring the world's oceans will require the incorporation of new technologies and approaches that enhance the efficiency of exploration, adopt the latest developments in autonomy, and recognize the value of ocean exploration for society’s benefit. This current topic provides an overview of the latest data, results, and innovations along with an assessment of the current gaps in ocean exploration in order to focus the community’s efforts and enhance the spread of current innovations. The Improved Land Tenancy in Sindh Province (ILTS) project, funded by the European Union and in partnership with the Government of Sindh, aims at contributing to responsible land and water governance in Sindh Province and helping its government and land users to address challenges they face regarding land tenure, food security and natural resources management. Its approach is based on the promotion of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT). The evaluation found that the project generated benefits in the domain of civic governance but not in the domain of official governance. Facilitated by its community-level platforms, the project’s outputs contributed significantly to tenant and landlord beneficiaries through the transparency, security and accessibility associated with informal land tenancy agreements and village grievance redressal committees. To this extent, the project has nurtured community-based civic governance for secure landlord-tenant agreements in its project area. The project’s VGGT strategy suffered from limitations in project design and the strategy. Furthermore, no improvements were reported in livestock productivity and community-based disaster risk reduction, which has not yet been introduced. Recommendations to FAO include actions to strengthen targeting, social inclusion, monitoring and evaluation, and sustainability and suggestions on how to optimize engagement with the government and other stakeholders in view of project experiences.
