In their quest to improve overall pavement performance and durability, pavement engineers in recent years developed and used innovative asphalt mixtures utilising engineered or modified asphalt binders. The technology of asphalt modification using refining processes has evolved in the past decade as a viable, effective alternative. Results of an extensive evaluation of several paving asphalt binders modified by refining processes are presented and discussed. The evaluation used testing and characterisation systems developed in the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and recent revisions of these systems as proposed in the NCHRP 9-10 project. Rheological, failure and ageing properties at temperatures that simulate pavement service were measured and analysed. Handling, constructability and performance characteristics of asphalt binders modified by refining processes are evaluated and compared with those of conventional materials and asphalt modified by different types of polymers. Comparative performance results on asphalt mixtures are presented to show the effect of the improvements in binder characteristics on mixture performance. Results on new binder test methods developed as part of NCHRP 9-10 are also presented comparing binder and mixture performance characteristics. For the covering abstract of this conference see ITRD number E211271.

In order to properly characterize modified asphalt binders and mixes for Alaskan pavements, this study evaluated properties of 13 asphalt binders typically used in Alaska from three different suppliers, and 10 hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures which were either produced in the lab or collected from existing paving projects in Alaska. Various binder and mixture engineering properties were determined, including true high binder grades, complex modulus (G*), and phase angle ( ́) at high performance temperatures, multiple stress creep recovery rate and compliance, bending beam rheometer stiffness and m-value, Glover-Rowe parameter, T, rheological index, and crossover frequency for binders, and rut depth, critical strain energy release rate (Jc), Indirect tensile (IDT) creep stiffness and strength for mixtures. Binder cracking temperatures were determined using asphalt binder cracking device. Mixture cracking temperatures were determined with IDT creep compliance and strength data. It was found that rutting and cracking resistances of the mixtures with highly modified binders were better than the mixture with unmodified asphalt binder (PG 52-28). Future recommendations for highly modified asphalt binders applications and research were provided based on laboratory testing results and field survey evaluation.

The effect of 11 asphalt binders on the moisture sensitivity of a mixture were measured using the Hamburg Wheel- Tracking Device (Hamburg WTD). The Hamburg WTD tests a slab of hot- mix asphalt submerged in hot water by rolling a steel wheel across its surface. The binders consisted of two unmodified asphalt binders, an air- blown asphalt binder, and eight polymer- modified asphalt binders. The continuous high- temperature performance grades (PG's) ranged from 67 to 77. Two aggregates were used: diabase and limestone. The mixture results using the limestone aggegate could not be used to evaluate the asphalt binders because the Hamburg WTD crushed the limestone aggregate. A test temperature of 58 degrees Celcius was chosen for the diabase mixtures based on trial tests using the air- blown and unmodified PG 70- 22 asphalt binders. It was expected that most of the mixtures with polymer- modified asphalt binders would have greater resistance to moisture damage than the mixture with the unmodified PG 70- 22 asphalt binder because they would provide increased adhesion to the aggregate or create a network within the asphalt that was more resistant to water penetration. However, only one polymer- modified asphalt binder provided a greater resistance at a 5- percent level of significance. Some of the asphalt binders provided significantly different resistances to moisture damage that were not related to differences in cohesive strength as measured by the asphalt binder parameter G*/sin(delta) at 58 degrees Celcius. It was concluded that polymer- modified asphalt binders having the same G*/sin(delta) can provide different adhesive strengths and/or different resistances to water penetration. Reasons for these differences need to be determined.

The main goal of the research reported here was to evaluate the use of modified binders in a pre-determined hot mix asphalt design. The modified hot mix asphalt blends (HMA-M) were evaluated using a number of performance tests, while the binders were evaluated separately to determine a true performance grade. The testing was conducted on a total of six different binder types.

Polymer modified asphalts have recently been the focus of much attention in the U.S. due to claims that polymer additives will lengthen the life of an asphalt pavement. Much of the published research on this topic has been concentrated on the effects of polymer modifiers on binder and mixture properties. The goal of this testing is to predict from laboratory testing the actual field performance of an asphalt concrete. Over the years, specifications have been developed for conventional asphalts that allow pavement performance to be predicted from certain binder tests. These conventional binder tests do not fully address the special characteristics of polymer modified asphalt binders and need revision to be an effective tool in predicting pavement service life. This paper presents the findings of a two-part laboratory research program intended to relate binder and mixture properties of polymer modified asphalts. The preliminary testing involved five asphalt binder types and a variety of binder and mixture tests. Promising test procedures were further investigated in the final testing program where ten asphalt binders were examined. Simple linear regression was used to determine the strength of a relationship between pairs of binder properties and mixture properties. The preliminary testing showed penetration, toughness and tenacity, and force ductility to have the most promise in predicting mixture performance. The final testing contained enough data to be analyzed with both simple linear regression and multiple regression. Penetration, toughness and tenacity, force ductility again were the test procedures that had binder properties that correlated well with mixture properties.
