Realizing the limitations of leaving the responsiblility for crime to police, communities in the last 20 years have assumed greater responsibility for their own safety & security. By becoming involved in crime prevention as auxiliary officers, as members of neighbourhood police committees or as participants in programs such as neighbourhood watch, citizens have begun to assume greater responsibility for the well-being of their community. In other communities the police are not the principal agent in the prevention of crime due to geographic isolation, the absence of funds or the inability of police agencies to meet community needs. With the changing dynamics of policing, community safety & security combined with limited resources, there has been a need to review crime prevention practices. This manual has been developed to facilitate the evaluation of crime prevention programs in First Nations communities. It covers background research, setting objectives, looking for information, planning the work & working towards the plan, the final report & feedback, & follow-up.
