This story is about a small denomination, the Evangelical Methodist Church (EMC), founded in 1946 at a prayer meeting in Memphis, TN. Dr. Hamblen, who had left the Methodist Church (presently the United Methodist Church), was asked to form a new holiness denomination. His prayer was, 'Lord, if this movement is of you, let it grow; if not, let it die". Dr. Hamblen's prayer is still facing the denomination after 75 years of victories and challenges. Methodism in America is a laity denomination. The church began as Methodist laypersons immigrated to America. The first Societies in America included active participation by people of African and European descent. The EMC attempted to combine the Methodist Episcopal Book of Discipline with Baptist congregational elements. The theology was correct, but the organizational structure of a congregational-connectional is the nemesis. This book traces the EMC story with an honest view of the 'sin in the camp' and the victories of mission expansion. The prophetic thread calls the EMC General Church to repentance and renewal, echoing in our ears the voice of Dr. Hamblen, 'let the movement live or let it die' according to God's plan. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Dr. Edward Williamson knew he was called to ministry when he was only a teenager. He followed that vision to Teen Challenge, a ministry to drug addicts in New York City. Dr. Williamson is married to Gilda Day and accomplished educator and artist. Gilda introduced Bibles for Myanmar, nutrition training and rice for the people. Gilda and Ed are serving as missionaries with One Mission Society. Ed serves as Vice President at large and Church Multiplication Facilitator for Myanmar and Gilda serves with Dynamic Women Ministries for Myanmar.

"The other strand of Methodism might be called populist Methodism. It, for the most part, was unofficial Methodism. It was the Methodism of log cabins, moral crusades, circuit preachers, revivals, camp meetings, prayer bands, and indigenous Methodist gospel music, including African American spirituals. It was an unmediated Christianity, one that did not need to be filtered through educated clergy or annual conferences. It was democracy in religion. Its authority was derived from the anointing of the Spirit and appealed to the power of primitive Methodism, or old-time religion. It is often referred to as grass-roots Methodism. It was Methodism not as an institution but as a movement.

Wesley and Methodist Studies (WMS) publishes peer-reviewed essays that examine the life and work of John and Charles Wesley, their contemporaries (proponents or opponents) in the eighteenth-century Evangelical Revival, their historical and theological antecedents, their successors in the Wesleyan tradition, and studies of the Wesleyan and Evangelical traditions today. Its primary historical scope is the eighteenth century to the present; however, WMS will publish essays that explore the historical and theological antecedents of the Wesleys (including work on Samuel and Susanna Wesley), Methodism, and the Evangelical Revival. WMS has a dual and broad focus on both history and theology. Its aim is to present significant scholarly contributions that shed light on historical and theological understandings of Methodism broadly conceived. Essays within the thematic scope of WMS from the disciplinary perspectives of literature, philosophy, education and cognate disciplines are welcome. WMS is a collaborative project of the Manchester Wesley Research Centre and The Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History, Oxford Brookes University.

Are we Methodists ready for the work of God to be unleashed? Are we ready for Methodism to be the catalyst of yet another New Pentecost? God has decisively acted in Christ, and Christ says, “Do this.” Therefore, there is only one real answer, since “not ready” is not a valid response. For United Methodism to be revived, there can be no more such excuses. Christ showed us his presence and power through Constant Word and Sacrament praxis during the time of the Acts 2 church. Christ then again showed us his same divine presence and power through Constant Word and Sacrament praxis during the Methodist-Evangelical Revival. We have now been given two millennia to view this work of God. We Methodists were born of this work of God. How much more being made ready to unleash it do we require?

How should the Methodist tradition continue to embody its evangelistic mission? Some believe effective evangelism requires ecclesial adaptation seeking relevance to attract outsiders. But does this strategy result in the church’s embrace of consumer market practices, pandering to a world of church shoppers? Others suggest the most evangelistic thing the church can do is to be the church, displaying to the world the attractive beauty of a holy community. But could this ironically distance the church from its context and neglect the many ways the church is called to engage the world? The Wesleys formed a people called Methodist, embodying an evangelistic mission combining commitments to disciplined spiritual life and vital social engagement. In this book, Conklin-Miller suggests faithful (United) Methodist evangelism requires living in the tension between the church and the world, “leaning both ways at once,” emphasizing the holiness of the church as a particular people, but at the same time, being a people sent to intercede in the world as servants, advocates, and witnesses. This understanding constitutes not only a broader reframing of evangelistic mission but also a vision for the identity and agency of the church in the Wesleyan tradition: a Methodist missional ecclesiology.

The Meaning Of Pentecost In Early Methodism written by Laurence W. Wood and has been published by Scarecrow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-09-23 with Religion categories.

John Fletcher's theology of Pentecost is generally unknown today, and this book is the first comprehensive treatise on this subject. His writings were in large part responsible for shaping the theology of early American Methodism, especially his treatise on Christian Perfection, which highlighted a theology of Pentecostal sanctification. Wood recounts the decisive influence Fletcher had on early Methodism, and shows that his writings were able to "control the opinions of the largest and most effective body of evangelical clergymen of the earth." Fletcher's views on the Holy Spirit were also relevant in the ecumenical movement, specifically with reference to the World Council of Churches Commission on Faith and Order held in Lima, Peru, in 1982. This group recommended the introduction of a liturgy of the Spirit in Christian baptism. For students and scholars or general readers interested in Methodist history and theology. Also a resource for pastors-helpful in developing a theology of Pentecost that will preach in a relevant way in the contemporary world.

An international group of Methodist scholars unite in the belief that another church and another world are not only necessary but possible. Holiness traditions, even though at times addressing matters too narrowly and at other times to triumphantly, are in agreement that the status quo in both church and world can be improved upon significantly. The question is not whether but how does this happen and how far does it go. Amidst ongoing discussions of reforms, reformations, and revolutions, this volume argues that comprehensive transformations are afoot. Our expectations are not built on shallow optimism or wide-spread beliefs in progress; they are built on evangelical expectations and holiness histories as they have shaped up since the beginnings of evangelical holiness movements. Recent decades, in particular, have rekindled broader perspectives that push beyond reductionistic focuses on individuals, closed communities, or particular church bodies. The hope of the gospel that is at the heart of the Methodist evangelical holiness traditions needs to be tested and verified in concrete transformations, which will be spelled out in the chapters of this book.Contributors: Cliff Bird, Timothy Eberhart, Kisitu Gyaviira, R.
