Das Bestreben dieses Buches ist es, den Variationsreichtum des schlesischen evangelischen Kirchenbauens seit dem Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in Bild und Text möglichst vollständig zu dokumentieren. Der Haupttitel zeigt zugleich an, dass nicht die Architektur im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit steht, sondern der Raum, in dem sich Gemeinde zur Feier ihrer Gottesdienste versammelt. Deshalb folgen Großstadtkirchen und Holzbaracken, neogotischer Backstein und umgestaltete Gasthaussäle in gleichem Range aufeinander. Der Textteil bietet in chronologischer Folge Grunddaten und Literatur. Nicht nur weil etwa 90 dieser Kirchräume zerstört oder dem Verfall preisgegeben wurden, ist der Band auch ein Erinnerungsbuch an eine lebendige Kirchenprovinz, die in knapp 200 Jahren 500 Kirchräume schuf und nun Geschichte geworden ist. [Worship Spaces. Documentation on the Protestant Church Building of the 19th and 20th Century in Silesia] The aim of this book is to document as completely as possible the wealth of variation in Silesian Protestant church building since the beginning of the 19th century in pictures and text. As the title indicates, the focus is not on the architecture, but on the space in which the congregation gathers to celebrate its services. For this reason, big-city churches and wooden barracks, neo-Gothic brick and remodeled inn halls follow one another in equal ranking. The text part offers in chronological order basic data and literature. The book also records the loss: about 90 of these church rooms have been abandoned to destruction and decay. Not only in this sense, therefore, this is also a book of remembrance of a living ecclesiastical province, which created 500 church spaces in just about 200 years and has now become history.

Historians of modern German culture and church history refer to "the Awakening movement" (die Erweckungsbewegung) to describe a period in the history of German Protestantism between the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and the Revolution of 1848. "The Awakening" was the last major nationwide Protestant reform and revival movement to occur in Germany. This book analyzes numerous primary sources from the era of the Awakening and synthesizes the current state of German scholarship for an English-speaking audience. It examines the Awakening as a product of the larger social changes that were re-shaping German society during the early decades of the nineteenth century. Theologically, Awakened Protestants were traditionalists. They affirmed religious doctrines that orthodox Protestants had professed since the confessional statements of the Reformation-era. Awakened Protestants rejected the changes that Enlightenment thought had introduced into Protestant theology and preaching since the mid-eighteenth century. However, Awakened Protestants were also themselves distinctly modern. Their efforts to spread their religious beliefs were successful because of the new political freedoms and economic opportunities that the Enlightenment had introduced. These social conditions gave German Protestants new means and abilities to pursue their religious goals. Awakened Protestants were leaders in the German churches and in the universities. They used their influence to found many voluntary organizations for evangelism, in Germany and abroad. They also established many institutions to ameliorate the living conditions of those in poverty. Adapting Protestantism to modern society in these ways was the most original and innovative aspect of the Awakening movement.

Im oberschlesischen Tarnowitz errichteten eingewanderte Bergknappen im Jahr 1526 ein hölzernes, bereits 1531 durch einen Steinbau ersetztes Kirchlein – das erste in Schlesien nachgewiesene der sich ausbreiteten evangelisch-reformatorischen Form christlichen Glaubens. Der hier vorgelegte zweite Teil der »Gottesdienst-Räume« erschließt im Text und soweit möglich auch im Bild ihre weitere Folge und Fülle bis an das Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts. Er vervollständigt damit die bereits für das 19. und 20. Jahrhundert vorliegende Dokumentation. Er ist wiederum das Bemühen um ein vollständiges Verzeichnis, eine chronologische Inventur aller Versammlungsräume, die sich evangelische Gemeinden errichtet haben, in Notbehelfen einfachster Gestalt bis hinzu den heute zum Weltkulturerbe gehörenden beiden Friedenskirchen in Jauer und Schweidnitz. Im Bildteil konnten 938 Abbildungen zusammengetragen werden, der Text bietet in chronologischer Folge Grunddaten und Literatur, eine Einführung skizziert knapp die kirchengeschichtliche Einbettung. Im Ziel steht der Versammlungsraum der Gemeinde, nicht Architekturgeschichte. Es sind Bilder von und Erinnerung an eine einst große und vielgestaltige deutsche Kirchenprovinz. [Worship Rooms Second Volume: A Documentation on Protestant Church Construction of the 16th to 18th Centuries in Silesia] In Tarnowitz in Upper Silesia, immigrant miners erected a small wooden church in 1526, which was replaced by a stone building in 1531 – it was the first church of the spreading Protestant-Reformational form of Christian faith in Silesia. In texts and, as far as possible, also in pictures, the second part of "Worship Rooms" presented here develops their further impact and wealth up to the end of the 18th century. It thus completes the documentation already available for the 19th and 20th centuries. It is, in turn, the quest for a complete index, a chronological inventory of all meeting rooms that were built by Protestant communities, in makeshift buildings of the simplest form up to the two churches of peace in Jauer and Schweidnitz, which today belong to the world cultural heritage. In the picture section, 938 illustrations could be collected; the text offers basic data and literature in chronological order, and an introduction sketches briefly its embedding in church history. The aim is the community's meeting room, not architectural history. These are pictures and memories of a German church province that was once great and diverse.
