Innovators of all stripes—such as Airbnb and Uber—are increasingly using new technological capabilities to circumvent traditional regulatory systems, or at least put pressure on public policymakers to reform laws and regulations that are outmoded, inefficient, or illogical. Disruptive innovators are emerging in other fields, too, using technologies as wide‐ranging as 3D printers, drones, driverless cars, Bitcoin and blockchain, virtual reality, the “Internet of Things,” and more. Some of these innovators just love to tinker. Others want to change the world with new life‐enriching products. And many more are just looking to earn a living and support their families. Regardless of why they are doing it, these evasive entrepreneurs— innovators who don’t always conform to social or legal norms—are changing the world and challenging their governments. Beyond boosting economic growth and raising our living standards, evasive entrepreneurialism can play an important role in constraining unaccountable governmental activities that often fail to reflect common sense or the consent of the governed. In essence, evasive entrepreneurialism and technological civil disobedience are new checks and balances that help us rein in the excesses of the state, make government more transparent and accountable, and ensure that our civil rights and economic liberties are respected. Evasive Entrepreneurs and the Future of Governance explores why evasive entrepreneurs are increasingly engaged in different forms of technological civil disobedience and also makes the case that we should accept—and often even embrace—a certain amount of that activity as a way to foster innovation, economic growth, and accountable government.

Te series Perspectives in Entrepreneurship: A Research Companion provides an authoritative overview of specialised themes in entrepreneurship. Each of the four books presents the conceptual framework and foundations underlying a specialist feld of scholarship in entrepreneurship. Te series is inspired by the dearth of higher-level texts available in South Africa, failing to encapsulate the rigorous research evident in the growing feld of entrepreneurship internationally. Te content is driven by a judicious selection and interpretation of key knowledge set in context by introducing and delineating major topics previously not discussed in-depth in traditional entrepreneurial texts. A blend of theoretical and empirical evidence is presented that collectively demonstrates the convergence of thinking on a particular theme. Identifying and evaluating the most seminal and impactful scholarly research on diferent subject areas where entrepreneurship is at the core, serves to achieve this convergence. By applying a theoretical lens to central issues ‘about entrepreneurship’ rather than focusing on practical issues of ‘how to’, the series has a conceptual outlook with specialist areas in detailed narrative. Te book is deliberately structured to add value to learners who are undertaking secondary programmes in entrepreneurship by building on basic entrepreneurship principles and theory. Te series builds on fundamental entrepreneurial texts. Each book provides a valuable knowledge base for educators, third year and postgraduate students, researchers, policy makers, and service providers.

In recent times, Technology (T), Innovation (I) and Entrepreneurship (E) have become matters of critical importance to the economic and competitve success of nations, firms, and startups. Yet a depressingly large number of people-politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen, engineers, academics-are still locked up in the 'isms' and managerial mindsets of the last century. One reason is the paucity of academic books addressing TIE issues in a manner empathetic to the concerns of developed as well as developing societies. This book is the first part of a new textbook trilogy that seeks to fill this gap. A special feature is the inclusion of comparative insights derived by the author during his academic pursuits in India, the UK, Hong Kong/China, and the USA. Part I (this book) examines TIE interactions from the perspectives of the world and nation-building. Parts II and III will do the same from the perspectives of individual firms and startups respectively.
