This unique book challenges the reader to see, in response to the genocide in Cambodia and its aftermath, compassion, sadness, love and righteous anger expressed by a remarkable man who shared his life with the poor during this time. The events and names in this book are real. For over 30 years Bob, a Jesuit Brother, has committed his life to living among the poor of Cambodia. He has been with them during their plight as refugees in camps on the Thai - Cambodian border. He has lived and 'walked' with them on the fearful return into their war-ravaged homeland. He has seen and experienced 'first-hand' the effect the war - and 'peace'- has had on them. He is still with them now. Bob wrote down these experiences. He wrote down his inner soul-searching response to the inhumanity of war and its consequences to individual lives. This book is a compilation of Bob's writings. They are unique. They are personal. They are deeply challenging. Many are an uncensored cry from the heart; anguish from a spiritual man seeking to challenge the evil of war and bring love and peace to mankind. Finally, in respect to Bob it needs to be stated that this book is not about him! That would be the last thing he would want or agree to. Instead the book is about situations in the world that should not be tolerated. It is hoped these personal tales and reflections can inspire the reader, whoever you may be, to be a peacemaker. We cannot be 'Bob' but we can learn from his selfless service of love to others. It's a remarkable lesson - a lesson for today.

Cozzens has stripped the myth from these stories, but he is such a superb writer that what remains is exquisite' The Times In a sweeping narrative, Peter Cozzens tells the gripping story of the wars that destroyed native ways of life as the American nation continued its expansion onto tribal lands after the Civil War, setting off a conflict that would last nearly three decades. By using original research and first-hand sources from both sides, Cozzens illuminates the encroachment experienced by the tribes and the tribal conflicts over whether to fight or make peace, and explores the squalid lives of soldiers posted to the frontier and the ethical quandaries faced by generals who often sympathized with their native enemies. Bringing together a cast of fascinating characters, including Custer, Sherman, Grant and a host of other military and political figures, as well as great native leaders such as Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Geronimo and Red Cloud, The Earth is Weeping is the fullest account to date of how the West was won... and lost.

He was the greatest Indian warrior of the nineteenth century. His victory over General Custer at the battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 was the worst defeat inflicted on the frontier Army. And the death of Crazy Horse in federal custody has remained a controversy for more than a century. The Killing of Crazy Horse pieces together the many sources of fear and misunderstanding that resulted in an official killing hard to distinguish from a crime. A rich cast of characters, whites and Indians alike, passes through this story, including Red Cloud, the chief who dominated Oglala history for fifty years but saw in Crazy Horse a dangerous rival; No Water and Woman Dress, both of whom hated Crazy Horse and schemed against him; the young interpreter Billy Garnett, son of a fifteen-year-old Oglala woman and a Confederate general killed at Gettysburg; General George Crook, who bitterly resented newspaper reports that he had been whipped by Crazy Horse in battle; Little Big Man, who betrayed Crazy Horse; Lieutenant William Philo Clark, the smart West Point graduate who thought he could “work” Indians to do the Army’s bidding; and Fast Thunder, who called Crazy Horse cousin, held him the moment he was stabbed, and then told his grandson thirty years later, “They tricked me! They tricked me!” At the center of the story is Crazy Horse himself, the warrior of few words whom the Crow said they knew best among the Sioux, because he always came closest to them in battle. No photograph of him exists today. The death of Crazy Horse was a traumatic event not only in Sioux but also in American history. With the Great Sioux War as background and context, drawing on many new materials as well as documents in libraries and archives, Thomas Powers recounts the final months and days of Crazy Horse’s life not to lay blame but to establish what happened.

Mark is a successful preacher and attorney who owns his church and has a seemingly perfect family. However, there is a secret he’s been hiding from his family for six years. He had a one-time affair with a black woman, who has just showed up on his door to reveal the child he knew nothing about. His perfect family is scattered as they all deal with his past sins. His wife, Claire, cannot accept his child into their home because she is afraid that it will cause the whole church to turn against them. Mark’s daughter, Sarah, once modeled her life after her seemingly perfect father, until she learns what he did. She goes on a downward spiral filled with rebellion and anger as she lashes out against everything she once believed in. Ciara, Mark’s six-year-old lovechild, has lost everything—her mother, her aunt—and now she is living with a new family who doesn’t want her there. Mark cannot believe his sin has resulted in the Lord’s wrath upon his family. He has lost his daughter, his wife, and now feels as if God Himself has walked away. Will Mark be able to realize that his love child isn’t a curse from God but a blessing meant to humble his family and bring them closer to His presence? If not, everything Mark worked hard for will wither away.

This Woman’s Work presents a social history and critical biography based on the life of award-winning writer Bebe Moore Campbell (1950–2006). It offers the personal story of a popular novelist, journalist, and mental health advocate. This book examines Campbell’s life and activism in two periods: first, as a student at the University of Pittsburgh during the 1960s black student movement and, second, as a mental health advocate near the end of her life in 2006. It describes Campbell’s activism within the Black Action Society from 1967 to 1971 and her negotiation of the Black Nationalist ideologies espoused during the 1960s. The book also explores Campbell’s later involvement in the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), her role as a national spokesperson, and the local activism that sparked the birth of the NAMI Urban–Los Angeles chapter, which served black and Latino communities (1999–2006). Adjacent to her activist work, Campbell’s first novel, Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine, connects to her emerging political consciousness (related to race and gender) and the concern for racial violence during the US black liberation period from 1950 to 1970. Similarly Campbell’s final novel, 72 Hour Hold, is examined closely for its connection to her activism as well as the sociopolitical commentary, emphasis on mental health disparities, coping with mental illness, and advocacy in black communities. As a writer and activist, Campbell immersed her readers in immediately relevant historical and sociopolitical matters. This Woman’s Work is the first full-length biography of Bebe Moore Campbell and details the seamless marriage of her fiction writing and community activism.

A WORD FROM LOUIS L’AMOUR “Almost forty years ago, when my fiction was being published exclusively in ‘pulp’ western magazines, I wrote several novel-length stories, which my editors called ‘magazine novels.’ In creating them, I became so involved with my characters that their lives were still as much a part of me as I was of them long after the issues in which they appeared became collector’s items. Pleased as I was about how I brought the characters and their adventures to life in the pages of the magazines, I still wanted the reader to know more about my people and why they did what they did. So, over the years, I revised and expanded these magazine works into fuller-length novels that I published in paperback under other titles. “These particular early magazine versions of my books have long been a source of great speculation and curiosity among many of my readers, so much so of late, that I’m now pleased to collect three of them in book form for the first time. “I hope you enjoy them.”

Winner of the prestigious Azorín Prize for Fiction, the best-selling novel about love, sacrifice, and Picasso's mistress, Dora Maar. A writer resembling Zoé Valdés—a Cuban exile living in Paris with her husband and young daughter—is preparing a novel on the life of Dora Maar, one of the most promising artists in the Surrealist movement until she met Pablo Picasso. The middle-aged Picasso was already the god of the art world's avant-garde. Dora became his lover, muse, and ultimately, his victim. She became The Weeping Woman captured in his famous portrait, the mistress he betrayed with other mistress-muses, and their affair ended with her commitment to an asylum at the hands of Picasso's friends. The writer's research centers on a mysterious trip to Venice that Dora took fifteen years later, in the company of two young gay men who were admirers of Picasso, including the biographer James Lord. After this episode, Dora cut off contact with the world and secluded herself in her Paris apartment until her death. "After Picasso, God," she would say. What happened in Venice? The more the writer investigates, the more she finds herself implicated in a story of passion taken to the extremes. In The Weeping Woman, prize-winning novelist Zoé Valdés narrates the journey of a woman who would do anything and everything for love. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more.
