As human sensory structures are often restricted to sensing a small range of visual, hearing, smell, taste, and touch events, the need for extending humans' limited sensory abilities has been a driving force for research, inventions and innovations that have led to discoveries of tools such as wireless sensor nodes. Wireless sensor nodes are inexpensive, multifunctional devices capable of extending humans' limited sensory abilities and they can be used easily to form wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which have a wide range of potential applications. Since wireless sensor nodes are typically battery-powered, a major concern in the design of WSNs is energy conservation as these networks are expected to operate autonomously for long periods. Therefore, this thesis presents a thorough research effort that has investigated ways of improving energy efficiency of WSNs. First, a theoretical model of a WSN's lifetime was established. The model includes collaborative communication and enabled communication techniques to be identified that minimize idle listening and maximise collision avoidance, both of which waste energy. Then the Collaborative Event Driven Energy Efficient Protocol (CEDEEP), which ensures energy efficient operation of one-hop, event-driven WSNs, was introduced. CEDEEP takes advantage of the spatiotemporal correlation of wireless sensor nodes' reporting in event-driven WSNs and uses collaborative communication to conserve energy. The presented analytical results prove the viability of this approach and show that CEDEEP offers considerable improvements in energy efficiency. Subsequently, a novel Energy Efficient Collision Avoidance Method (EECAM) for CEDEEP was proposed. EECAM makes possible higher energy savings by introducing node prioritization based on the distinctive properties of the CEDEEP protocol and event-driven WSN applications. Furthermore, a stochastic model of the one-hop network was developed and the higher energy efficiency of CEDEEP with EECAM was illustrated using the IEEE 802.15.4 and Sift protocols. Therefore, this thesis provides diverse analytical models and offers strong evidence that use of CEDEEP with EECAM, as an event-driven protocol, contributes considerably to the energy efficiency of event-driven WSNs. In this way not only has a superior event-driven protocol been proposed, but a robust basis for future research focused on energy-efficient, event-driven protocols for WSNs has been established.

The third edition of this hands-on textbook pursues the focus on the principles of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), their applications, their protocols and standards, and their analysis and test tools; a meticulous care has been accorded to the definitions and terminology. To make WSNs felt and seen, the adopted technologies as well as their manufacturers are presented in detail. In introductory computer networking books, chapters sequencing follows the bottom up or top down architecture of the seven layers protocol. This book is some more steps after, both horizontally and vertically, the view and understanding are getting clearer, chapters ordering is based on topics significance to the elaboration of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) concepts and issues. This book is intended for a wide audience, it is meant to be help and motivate, for both the senior undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers, and practitioners; concepts and WSNs related applications are laid out, research and practical issues are backed by appropriate literature, and new trends are put under focus. For senior undergraduate students, it familiarizes with conceptual foundations, applications and practical projects implementations. For graduate students and researchers, energy-efficient routing protocols, transport layer protocols and cross-layering protocols approach are presented. Testbeds and simulators provide a must follow emphasis on the analysis methods and tools for WSNs. For practitioners, besides applications and deployment, the manufacturers and components of WSNs at several platforms and testbeds are fully explored.

Wireless Sensor Networks came into prominence around the start of this millennium motivated by the omnipresent scenario of small-sized sensors with limited power deployed in large numbers over an area to monitor different phenomenon. The sole motivation of a large portion of research efforts has been to maximize the lifetime of the network, where network lifetime is typically measured from the instant of deployment to the point when one of the nodes has expended its limited power source and becomes in-operational - commonly referred as first node failure. Over the years, research has increasingly adopted ideas from wireless communications as well as embedded systems development in order to move this technology closer to realistic deployment scenarios. In such a rich research area as wireless sensor networks, it is difficult if not impossible to provide a comprehensive coverage of all relevant aspects. In this book, we hope to give the reader with a snapshot of some aspects of wireless sensor networks research that provides both a high level overview as well as detailed discussion on specific areas.

New generations of IT users are increasingly abstracted from the underlying devices and platforms that provide and safeguard their services. As a result they may have little awareness that they are critically dependent on the embedded security devices that are becoming pervasive in daily modern life. Secure Smart Embedded Devices, Platforms and Applications provides a broad overview of the many security and practical issues of embedded devices, tokens, and their operation systems, platforms and main applications. It also addresses a diverse range of industry/government initiatives and considerations, while focusing strongly on technical and practical security issues. The benefits and pitfalls of developing and deploying applications that rely on embedded systems and their security functionality are presented. A sufficient level of technical detail to support embedded systems is provided throughout the text, although the book is quite readable for those seeking awareness through an initial overview of the topics. This edited volume benefits from the contributions of industry and academic experts and helps provide a cross-discipline overview of the security and practical issues for embedded systems, tokens, and platforms. It is an ideal complement to the earlier work, Smart Cards Tokens, Security and Applications from the same editors.
