Can science and magic ever exist in harmony? Bram, an engineer in the southern city of Ral Tora, doesn’t think so. It’s science that will save his city from the cruel winter devouring the land, not superstition. But as the ice draws closer and Ral Tora’s science fails, his convictions don’t seem quite so secure, especially when a stranger arrives claiming that he holds the key to salvation. Astrid, Regal of Chellin, doesn’t care. Ruthless and ambitious, she’s climbed over everyone to get where she is – and she’s not about to let the Everwinter ruin everything she’s worked for. Determined to turn the chaos to her advantage, she needs just one thing to achieve her goal –a certain Ral Toran engineer who is far more than he seems. Falen, banished princess of the northern city of Variss, knows more than she’s letting on. Her adopted home of Ral Tora might think magic isn’t real, but she knows otherwise. Tasked by ancient edict to guard a terrible secret, her family has long been aware of the threat imprisoned beyond the Broken Sisters – and the disaster that would unfold if it was ever released. Now the fate of the land lies suddenly in the hands of a manipulative politician who’ll stop at nothing to further her own ends, a disgraced princess who is desperate to put right her family’s shame, and a sceptical engineer who doesn’t believe in any of it. Falling in love with a Vampire King was not part of my plan. Typically, my daily routine is to get up, enjoy my hot chocolate, go to work at my book store, go home, cook, clean, read a book and go to bed. Simple. Relaxing. Calm. But not all days go as planned. Nope. Some days, you get up, have your morning hot chocolate, go to work, head home only to be portalled to another world. I've done my best to try to fit in. But while changing my clothes seemed reasonable, sharing a bed with their king put an entirely new level of complication on things. Try to sort out your day when that happens. Especially when nobody in your new surroundings knows how you got there, let alone how to get you home.

The Anaasází people left behind marvelous structures, the ruins of which are preserved at Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, and Canyon de Chelly. But what do we know about these people, and how do they relate to Native nations living in the Southwest today? Archaeologists have long studied the American Southwest, but as historian Robert McPherson shows in Viewing the Ancestors, their findings may not tell the whole story. McPherson maintains that combining archaeology with knowledge derived from the oral traditions of the Navajo, Ute, Paiute, and Hopi peoples yields a more complete history. McPherson’s approach to oral tradition reveals evidence that, contrary to the archaeological consensus that these groups did not coexist, the Navajos interacted with their Anaasází neighbors. In addition to examining archaeological literature, McPherson has studied traditional teachings and interviewed Native people to obtain accounts of their history and of the relations between the Anaasází and Athapaskan ancestors of today’s Hopi, Pueblo, and Navajo peoples. Oral history, McPherson points out, tells why things happened. For example, archaeological findings indicate that the Hopi are descended from the Anaasází, but Hopi oral tradition better explains why the ancient Puebloans may have left the Four Corners region: the drought that may have driven the Anaasází away was a symptom of what had gone wrong within the society—a point that few archaeologists could derive from what is found in the ground. An important text for non-Native scholars as well as Native people committed to retaining traditional knowledge, Viewing the Ancestors exemplifies collaboration between the sciences and oral traditions rather than a contest between the two.
