Fred "Duke" Slater was the greatest African American football player of the first half of the 20th century. Born into poverty, he developed into a two-time All-American tackle at the University of Iowa from 1918 to 1921. When the College Football Hall of Fame opened decades later, Duke was the only African American elected in the inaugural class. He then became the first black lineman in National Football League history in 1922, embarking on a remarkable ten-year career in the NFL. Incredibly, Slater was the only African American in the entire NFL for most of the late 1920s, yet he was widely recognized as one of the League's best linemen. But his pioneering influence extended beyond the gridiron. After retirement, he broke ground in the legal field as just the second black judge in Chicago history. On the field or on the bench, the inspirational life of Judge Duke Slater is a true American success story.

From one of America’s most popular short story writers and an Academy Award nominee: the O. Henry Award–winning tale that inspired the movie The Hunt. A subject of mysterious rumors and superstition, the deserted Caribbean Island was shrouded in an air of peril. To Sanger Rainsford, who fell off a yacht and washed up on its shores, the abandoned isle was a welcome paradise. But unknown to the big-game hunter, a predator lurked in its lush jungles—one more dangerous than any he had ever encountered: a human. First published in 1924, this suspenseful tale “has inspired serial killers, films and stirred controversy in schools. A century on, the story continues to thrill” (The Telegraph). “[A] tense, relentless story of man-against-man adventure, in which the hunter Sanger Rainsford learns, at the hands of General Zaroff, what it means to be hunted.” —Criterion

Despite the pervasive rhetorics of immersion and embodiment found in industrial and social discourses, playing a video game is an exercise in non-linearity. The pervasiveness of trial and error mechanics, unforgiving game over screens, loading times, minute tweakings of options and settings, should lead us to consider video games as a medium that cannot eschew fragmentation. Every Game is an Island is an analysis and a critique of grey areas, dead ends and extremities found in digital games, an exploration of border zones where play and non-play coexist or compete. Riccardo Fassone describes the complexity of the experience of video game play and brings integral but often overlooked components of the gameplay experience to the fore, in an attempt to problematize a reading of video games as grandiosely immersive, all-encompassing narrative experiences. Through the analysis of closures and endings, limits and borders, and liminal states, this field-advancing study looks at the heart of a medium starting from its periphery.

Timed perfectly for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Chuck Korr and Marvin Close's More Than Just a Game tells the timeless true story of how political prisoners under apartheid found hope and dignity through soccer. In the hell that was Robben Island, inmates united courageously in an act of protest. Beginning in 1964, they requested the right to play soccer during their exercise periods. Denied repeatedly, they risked beatings and food deprivation by repeating their request for three years. Finally granted this right, the prisoners banded together to form a multi-tiered, pro-level league that ran for more than two decades and served as an impassioned symbol of resistance against apartheid. Former Robben Island inmate Nelson Mandela noted in the documentary FIFA: 90 Minutes for Mandela, "Soccer is more than just a game.... The energy, passion, and dedication this game created made us feel alive and triumphant despite the situation we found ourselves in."

Andrew Goldstein delved into the world of football at age five and, through a mistake that is equal parts painful and wonderful, somehow ended up rooting for the New York Jets. Thirteen years later, he decided to write a book about it. The uplifting, disheartening, wonderful, awful, hilarious, and generally crazy experiences in the middle? Theyre all in the pages of this book. Growing Up Green is an attempt to shed a little bit of light on what it means to be a sports fan, and how the fan experience shapes us throughout our lives. This story will be told not through the lens of an expert, but from the perspective of a regular football fanatic who bleeds green and white. Along the way, youll either discover or re-discover the inner workings of a sports fans mind, and have a heck of a good time doing it. If youre a diehard, a casual fan, have the slightest bit of curiosity in what it means to be a fan, or are Andrew Goldsteins immediate friends and family, then this book is for you.

SUNDAY TIMES CRICKET BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023 WISDEN CRICKET BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023 CRICKET SOCIETY AND MCC BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2023 DEREK HODGSON BOOK AWARD 2023 (awarded by the Cricket Writers' Club) 'This is a great tale, and what's more, it's beautifully told.' – Simon Barnes From Sathasivam to Sangakkara, Murali to Malinga, Sri Lanka can lay claim to some of the world's most remarkable cricketers – larger-than-life characters who thumbed convention and played the game their own way. This is the land of pint-sized, swashbuckling batsmen, on-the-fly innovators and contorted, cryptic spinners. More so than anywhere else in the world, Sri Lankan cricket has an identity: cricket is Sri Lanka, and Sri Lanka is cricket. We all know the story of the 1996 World Cup: how a team of unfancied amateurs rose from obscurity and changed the way the game was played. Yet the lore of Sri Lankan cricket stretches back much further, from early matches between colonists and locals, and Ashes-bound ships bringing in cricket's biggest stars, to the more recent triumphs and tragedies that stem from cash flowing freely into the game. An Island's Eleven tells this story in full for the first time, focusing on the characters and moments that have shaped the game forever.
