Excerpt from Woman and the Law This work is designed to serve the purposes of a general view of the legal condition of the women of the United States at the present time, and is more especially for the reading of women. It is a general statement and not an exhaustive analysis; it is not designed for the practising lawyer, man or woman, for though it deals with legal principles, it does not apply them to concrete cases; and least of all is it an attempt to make every woman her own lawyer. American women, whether studying alone or in clubs, are coming more and more to take an appreciative interest in the sociological development of the nation, and naturally a subject to engage their attention is the condition of their fellow-women viewed from all standpoints. Perhaps the most difficult branch of the general subject to be handled by women in a comprehensive way is the positive law, both because the material is not easily accessible and because some experience is needed to make use of the material when found. A Law Of Her Own written by Caroline Forell and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-05-01 with Social Science categories.

Despite the apparent progress in women's legal status, the law retains a profoundly male bias, and as such contributes to the pervasive violence and injustice against women. In A Law of Her Own, the authors propose to radically change law's fundamental paradigm by introducing a "reasonable woman standard" for measuring men's behavior. Advocating that courts apply this standard to the conduct of men-and women-in legal settings where women are overwhelmingly the injured parties, the authors seek to eliminate the victimization and objectification of women by dismantling part of the legal structure that supports their subordination. A woman-based legal standard-focusing on respect for bodily integrity, agency, and autonomy-would help rectify the imbalance in how society and its legal system view sexual and gender-based harassment, rape, stalking, battery, domestic imprisonment, violence, and death. Examining the bias of the existing "reasonable person" standard through analysis of various court cases and judicial decisions, A Law of Her Own aims to balance the law to incorporate women's values surrounding sex and violence.

That’s why divorce consultant Margery Rubin has created What Your Divorce Lawyer May Not Tell You, a unique guide for the woman working to stay afloat during one of the most difficult times of her life. Learn: • How to select the right lawyer and negotiate a price you can afford. • Why waiting to consult an attorney—even if you’re not sure you’re going to file for divorce—can be a costly mistake. • Where to look for important financial information that your spouse might be hiding. • How to build in “safeguards” to your custody agreement to prevent costly court battles later on. Packed with the author’s expertise—gained first during the breakup of her own marriage to a top divorce attorney, and then as the founder of DivorceSource, a consulting firm dedicated to advising women on how to navigate divorce proceedings—this book gives women invaluable, step-by-step advice on everything they need to survive their marriage’s end…and get on with the rest of their lives.
