Every Wrong Direction recreates and dissects the bitter education of Dan Burt, an American émigré who never found a home in America. It begins in the row homes of Jewish immigrants and working-class Italians on the mean streets of 1950s South Philadelphia. Every Wrong Direction follows the author from the rough, working-class childhood that groomed him to be a butcher or charter boat captain, through America, Britain and Saudi Arabia as student, lawyer, spy, culture warrior, and expatriate, ending with a photo of his college rooms at St John’s College, Cambridge. Between this beginning and end, through a Philadelphia commuter college, to Cambridge, then Yale Law School, across the working to upper classes, three countries, and seven cities over 43 years, it maps his pursuit of, realization, disillusionment with and abandonment of America and the American Dream. Praise for Dan Burt's previous memoir, You Think It Strange: “Burt’s early life was indeed a triumph of wit and will. He managed to escape a world filled with violence and a culture that valued street smarts over book smarts, all the while knowing that just about everyone around him thought little of his prospects. That he made it out at all is extraordinary. That he became a successful lawyer and writer is virtually unimaginable.” —Commonweal “Dan Burt is a fine poet, and this memoir has all the sensitivity and vigilance you might expect from a writer with such a background. But his prose also has a robustness and documentary power that continually startles and engages. As it combines these things, You Think It Strange catches the strangeness of the world and makes it familiar.” —Sir Andrew Motion, Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom, 1999-2009

Where are you headed? Why are you moving in the direction you are headed? Are you on a mission for the Lord? Or, are you missing in action? Dr. Karry Wesley's book, Moving In the Wrong Direction: A Study of the Book of Jonah, gives special attention to the main character of the story. Although the book mentions the city of Nineveh, it is really about the heart of Jonah and how it reflects the hearts of all believers. Jonah was a sincere prophet with a serious problem. Although we have surrendered our lives to God, often we are divinely directed to do things that we would prefer not to do. All of us have been guilty of Moving In the Wrong Direction at some point on the mission field. As you study, Moving In the Wrong Direction : A Study of the Book of Jonah, you may see how easily your name could be the title of the book in the Bible.

Whereas, it was Eve's wrong decision to eat of the forbidden fruit that created a mess for all of mankind. Sisters, if we could go back and erase the mistakes we've made in the past, we all would. However, since that is not possible we must continually try to make the right decisions. Which will keep us on the right path.

A young secular writer's journey along ancient religious pilgrimage routes in Spain, Japan and the Ukraine leads to a surprise family reconciliation in this literary memoir Gideon Lewis-Kraus arrived in free-spirited Berlin from San Francisco as a young writer in search of a place to enjoy life to the fullest, and to forget the pain his father, a gay rabbi, had caused his family when he came out in middle age and emotionally abandoned his sons. But Berlin offers only unfocused dissipation, frustration and anxiety; to find what he is looking for (though he's not quite sure what it is), Gideon undertakes three separate ancient pilgrimages, travelling hundreds of miles: the thousand-year old Camino de Santiago in Spain with a friend, a solo circuit of eighty-eight Buddhist temples on the Japanese island of Shikoku, and finally, with his father and brother, a migration to the tomb of a famous Hassidic mystic in the Ukraine. It is on this last pilgrimage that Gideon reconnects with his father, and discovers that the most difficult and meaningful quest of all was the journey of his heart. A beautifully written, throught-provoking, and very moving meditation on what gives our lives a sense of purpose, and how we travel between past and present in search of hope for our future. Gideon Lewis-Kraushas written for numerous US publications, including Harper's, The Believer, The New York TimesBook Review, Los Angeles TimesBook Review, Slate, and others. A 2007-08 Fulbright scholarship brought him to Berlin, a hotbed of contemporary restlessness where he conceived this book. He now lives in New York, but continues to find himself frequently on the road to other places. "Beautiful, often very funny... a story that is both searching and purposeful, one that forces the reader, like the pilgrim, to value the journey as much as the destination." New Yorker "Gideon Lewis-Kraus has written a very honest, very smart, very moving book about being young and rootless and even wayward. With great compassion and zeal he gets at the question: why search the world to solve the riddle of your own heart?" Dave Eggers "If David Foster Wallace had written Eat, Pray, Loveit might have come close to approximating the adventures of Gideon Lewis-Kraus" Gary Shteyngart
