Was ist eine Ausstellung? Was macht man, wenn man ausstellt? Kann man sinnvollerweise behaupten, dass Ausstellungen einen Erkenntniswert haben? Thomas Zingelmann entwickelt in seinem Buch anhand zahlreicher Alltagsbeispiele einen differenzierten Ausstellungsbegriff, mit dem es möglich ist, verschiedene Formen und Funktionen von Ausstellungen zu unterscheiden und den Erkenntniswert von Ausstellungen sinnvoll zu begründen. Die mit der Behauptung, dass Ausstellungen zur Erkenntnis beitragen, verbundenen Ansprüche variieren von Vermittlungsfunktionen bis hin zur These, dass Ausstellungen den Wissenschaften äquivalent seien. Man erwartet von Ausstellungen, dass sie mit ihren je eigenen Mitteln zu den verschiedensten Themen Erkenntnisse erzeugen. Dieser Erkenntnisanspruch wird in der Regel kaum begründet, noch in den Kontext gegenwärtiger erkenntnistheoretischer Debatten eingebettet. Allerdings ist diese Diskussion oftmals noch durch eine andere Eigentümlichkeit gekennzeichnet: Was eine Ausstellung ist oder was man macht, wenn man ausstellt, wird wie eine Selbstverständlichkeit behandelt. Eine Philosophie des Ausstellens, die versucht, einen Erkenntniswert von Ausstellungen zu begründen, muss zuallererst aufweisen, was eine Ausstellung ist. Die Arbeit versteht sich im Sinne einer (formalen) Alltagsästhetik, welche Form und Funktion des Selbstverständlichen, Routinierten und Unauffälligen untersucht. Der Autor zeigt, dass Ausstellungen für den Selbst- wie den Weltbezug von Bedeutung sind.

This book presents over 20 authors’ reflections on ‘curating care’ – and presents a call to give curatorial attention to the primacy of care for all life and for more ‘caring curating’ that responds to the social, ecological and political analysis of curatorial caregiving. Social and ecological struggles for a different planetary culture based on care and respect for the dignity of life are reflected in contemporary curatorial practices that explore human and non-human interdependence. The prevalence of themes of care in curating is a response to a dual crisis: the crisis of social and ecological care that characterizes global politics and the professional crisis of curating under the pressures of the increasingly commercialized cultural landscape. Foregrounding that all beings depend on each other for life and survival, this book collects theoretical essays, methodological challenges and case studies from curators working in different global geographies to explore the range of ways in which curatorial labour is rendered as care. Practising curators, activists and theorists situate curatorial labour in the context of today’s general care crisis. Mit der 'Sattelzeit' und den gesellschaftlichen Transformationen um 1800 wird für gewöhnlich das Ende determinierter Zukunftserwartungen und der Beginn eines modernen, offenen Zukunftsdenkens verbunden. Diese Studie revidiert das Modernenarrativ der offenen Zukunft, indem sie den theoretischen und literarischen Schließungsverfahren nachgeht, mit denen die Lücke zwischen Erfahrungsraum und Erwartungshorizont im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert unmittelbar wieder geschlossen werden sollte. Eine Verfahrensanalyse von Poetiken, Ästhetiken, Geschichtsphilosophie, Staatstheorie und Historiographie, von literarischen, probabilistischen, protobiologischen und kunsttheoretischen Schriften zeigt, dass die Schließung der offenen Zukunft keine spätere 'Entgleisung' der Moderne ist, sondern zur Grundstruktur ihrer Denkformen und Wissensordnungen gehört und als solche auch in den nachfolgenden Jahrhunderten regelmäßig wiederkehrt. 2024 marks the 250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich’s birth. His international fame was determined to a great extent by three major retrospective exhibitions, held in London, Hamburg and Dresden in the 1970s. This book examines their role for the artist’s reception and for the shaping of ‘Romanticism’ as a cultural concept, as well as describing them within the broader political contexts of their time. In addition, it presents archive material that has received little or no attention within the existing research on Friedrich and his artistic œuvre.
