Publicado em 1933, Evolução política do Brasil tem peso decisivo em dois ciclos importantes na vida cultural brasileira: o primeiro deles é o dos grandes ensaios de interpretação da nação da década de 1930, que reúne nada menos que Casa-grande & senzala, de Gilberto Freyre, e Raízes do Brasil, de Sérgio Buarque de Holanda. Num contexto em que a modernização assumia o sentido de urbanização e industrialização, esses textos mergulharam profundamente na história do país, especulando sobre que futuro seria possível para a sociedade que vinha se formando desde a experiência colonial. O outro ciclo em que a obra se destaca é o dos estudos marxistas da história do Brasil. O materialismo histórico era então bastante incipiente no país, praticamente coincidindo com a fundação do Partido Comunista do Brasil, em 1922. Ambos os ciclos culminaram na grande obra de Caio Prado Jr., Formação do Brasil contemporâneo, de 1942, livro que abriu a coleção do autor na Companhia das Letras. Mas é Evolução política do Brasil que anuncia a interpretação que posteriormente será desenvolvida. A presente edição de Evolução política do Brasil teve por base a de 1953, na qual o autor acrescentou ensaios posteriores, de história, geografia e demografia, ao trabalho original. Entre eles, encontram-se trabalhos importantes, como aqueles sobre a cidade de São Paulo, estudos precursores em que se faz sentir a influência da geografia com a qual o autor entrou em contato como aluno da recém-criada Universidade de São Paulo, e ensaios sobre o Império, em que chama a atenção para a importância desse período da história brasileira.
