Excerpt from Evolution and Genetics HE third reprinting Of the Vanuxem Lectures for 1915-16, entitled A Critique of the Theory of Evolution, having been exhausted, the publishers have asked for a revised edition. The revision is no less an attempt at a critique Of the evolution theory than its predecessor, but, as the change in title sug gests, greater attention is here paid to one Of the most debated questions among evolutionists today, namely, the bearing Of the recent discoveries in genetics and in mutation on the theory Of evolution. While in a general way Darwin's theory Of Natu ral Selection is independent Of the origin Of the new variations that furnish it with its materials, yet the scientific formulation Of the theory is intimately con nected with the origin and inheritance Of suitable vari ations. For instance, if most of the observed variabil ity Of animals and plants were due directly to the environment, and if the effects thus brought about were not inherited, such variability could no longer be appealed to as material for natural selection. Again, if the variations that appear as mutants are always defective types, they could not, even though they are inherited, be appealed to as furnishing ma terial for progressive evolution. Excerpt from Textbook of Evolution and Genetics If we look back through the long ages of recorded history we cannot fail to note another analogy in the gradually increasing complexity of society, in the development of mankind from savagery to primitive cultures and finally to the great civilizations which have come and gone. Each stage has contributed to the greatness of its successors, each has added to the complexity of human knowledge, each has made man a little more independent of his environment, each has turned his thoughts a little more keenly inward until race consciousness has become an active factor in the shaping of human destiny. Behind this long record we find a few remnants which tell us of the infancy of the human race. Crude drawings on the walls of caverns and the implements which these primitive peoples used disclose something of their limited culture. Bones associated with these eloquent legacies tell us much of the characteristics of the people who left them. Every thing points to gradual change, but behind these records - what? Man has first of all a heritage, in common with all other organ isms, a thing without which he cannot exist. He lives surrounded by conditions of various kinds which, in the aggregate, we call his environment. Environment is a second essential; to it the heritage responds within the limits of its possibility. The combination means life. We know from our own experience that life can exist without consciousness. We know too that at some time in the ascending complexity of individual development consciousness dawns, and the individual responds to the world about him not merely as a series of reactions to environmental stimuli, but with an awakening realization of other entities about him, and at last a consciousness of self. Where this point lies in the organic world we cannot say with certainty; it may be that man alone is more than an organic automaton. The light of personal experience clarifies its significance. Have we always, as a species, possessed this quality which must develop in each individual? In View of the records just mentioned this seems unlikely. Back of that crude beginning of our record of man's progress there must have been something. Consciousness must have had a beginning. Excerpt from Readings in Evolution, Genetics, and Eugenics The one-man textbook is only too often written to emphasize the author's pet theories and is likely to be unduly biased. The present work is completely non-partisan. It consists Of the writ ings Of many authors and presents many diverse theories. The student is left to balance the various views one against another and to form his own judgment. It is very unfortunate, but none the less true, that even in these scientific days, the subject of evolution has a bad name in many communities and in many educational institutions with religious affiliations. The mistake is made of supposing that evolution and religion are diametrically opposed. The present writer has been at some pains to make it clear that evolution and religion are strictly compatible. We teachers of evolution in the colleges have no Sinister designs upon the religious faith Of our students. Excerpt from Problems of Genetics This book gives the substance of a series of lectures delivered in Yale University, where I had the privilege of holding the office of Silliman Lecturer in 1907. The delay in publication was brought about by a variety of causes. Inasmuch as the purpose of the lectures is to discuss some of the wider problems of biology in the light of knowledge acquired by Mendelian methods of analysis, it was essential that a fairly full account of the conclusions established by them should first be undertaken and I therefore postponed the present work till a book on Mendel's Principles had been completed. On attempting a more general discussion Of the bearing Of the phenomena on the theory of Evolution, I found myself continually hindered by the consciousness that such treatment is premature, and by doubt whether it were not better that the debate should for the present stand indefinitely adjourned. That species have come into existence by an evolutionary process no one seriously doubts; but few who are familiar with the facts that genetic research has revealed are now inclined to speculate as to the manner by which the process has been ac complished. Our knowledge of the nature and properties Of living things is far too meagre to justify any such attempts. Suggestions of course can be made: though, however, these ideas may have a stimulating value in the lecture room, they look weak and thin when set out in print. The work which may one day give them a body has yet to be done. The development of negations is always an ungrateful task apt to be postponed for the positive business of experiment. Such work is happily now going forward in most of the centers of scientific life. Of many of the subjects here treated we already know more than we did in 1907. The delay in production has made it possible to incorporate these new contributions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Plant Genetics It should be realized that genetics is a natural out growth from the study of organic evolution. The con ception of evolution began as a speculation, but became scientific in connection with the work of lamarck and darwin. In such work the method used was that of Observation and inference. Facts were observed and an explanation was devised that would relate them. Resemblances and differences among species were noted, and it was inferred that these indicated degrees of relationship. It was assumed that closely related species must have had a comparatively recent common ancestry and that more distantly related species must have had a more remote common ancestry. Through comparisons of structure and of geographical distribution systems of phylogeny have been inferred, and an outline of the evolution of the plant and animal kingdoms has been the result. All of these conclusions are based upon comparison and inference. This method reached its extreme application in the work of darwin, whose observations included a range of forms and an extent of time unequaled by any pre ceding student oi evolution. It may be said that in darwin's work the method of comparison and infer ence reached the limit of its possibilities. The students of evolution were chiefly concerned With explaining the Changes that resulted in phylogeny. In other words. Excerpt from Development and Evolution: Including Psychophysical Evolution, Evolution by Orthoplasy, and the Theory of Genetic Modes The relation of this Volume to the two earlier ones is spoken of above. The close connection of the three volumes, all of which might have been made parts of a single larger work, renders necessary the repeated citation of each one of them in the others, in a way which may seem - and has seemed, to one critic - to be a case of a writer's liking 'to quote himself.' It is really, however, a matter of division of material - with separate publication of the parts - and the references are such as one usually finds from chapter to chapter in the course of one work. The interconnection of the topics it is, therefore, with the need of expounding them, for the sake of comprehensive ness, in this interconnection, that gives a somewhat per sonal look to these references. The Evolution of Genetics provides a review of the development of genetics. It is not intended as a history of the science of heredity. By a brief and general survey, however, it seeks to show the connections of past to present research, and of current discoveries to future investigations. The book opens with a chapter on the legacy of classical genetics. This is followed by separate chapters on the use of microorganisms in molecular genetics; the structure and replication of genetic material; mutation and recombination of genetic material; the heterocatalytic function of genetic material; and concludes with a discussion of the future of genetics. Undergraduates considering a career of teaching or research in biology, students who are embarking on graduate studies in biology, professional biologists working in fields other than genetics but interested in current research on heredity, and laymen who have had some education in biology and have a continued interest in biological science may find something useful in this book.
