For example, men had been aware for ages of the existence of a past history of the human race before Daniel (or the author of the Book of Daniel) made the first attempt to View that history as a whole, and give a summary account of it. If Daniel had been the first person to persuade thinking men that the past had differed appreciably from the present, it is clear that his particular account of the historical process would have had a greater intellectual influence than it has actually had} We must therefore carefully distinguish between two quite different doctrines which Darwin popularised, the doctrine of evolution, and that of natural selection. It is quite possible to hold the first and not the second. It is older than the Darwinian hypothesis it is older than Lamarck, who published his particular theory in 1809, the year that Darwin was born; it is older than Buffon or Kant. In a fairly definite form it is as old as Aristotle. The Evolution idea has thus itself evolved, and is the product of many centuries of thought. Yet it was only the last generation that began to give the idea serious considera tion, and it is perhaps only the present that has granted it any general measure of acceptance and it was Darwin who wrought this change, who raised the conception of Evolution from the status of a vague speculative idea to that of a well-grounded theory, which appeals to the majority of educated minds as satisfactory and reasonable. We do not here propose to sketch the development of the idea, either before or after Darwin but only, in the first place, to state the grounds on which the belief in Evolution is based, and, in the second, to trace roughly the lines along which animal Evolution has proceeded. Excerpt from The Evolution of Life: Its Origin, History and Future The University of Chicago in December, 1955, began planning its celebration of the centenary in the most appropriate manner - bringing to bear on the subject of evolution current knowledge from a variety of relevant fields, thus advancing once more our understanding of the world and man. About fifty scientists were selected during 1956, and their themes were agreed upon; during 1957 and 1958 they developed the papers that are published here. As these were completed, they were exchanged among the authors. Armed with new information and insights, all but five of the authors met at the University on November 22, 1959, to prepare for panel discussions of the issues in evolution; these were held for the public during a five-day Celebration, beginning on the Centennial of the publication date of Origin of Species. The discus sions were based on the papers that had been prepared and distributed in advance, but were not delivered at the Celebration. The present volume, The Evolution of Life, and its companion volume, The Evolution of Man, represent most of the collected Uni versity of Chicago Centennial papers.
