Tempered martensite ferritic steels are used for critical components in fossil fired power plants that operate in the creep range. The materials contain a high density of dislocations and precipitates form on all types of internal interfaces, the majority of which represent subgrain boundaries. Most previous studies suffer from either only relating to short term creep experiments or from being incomplete in not considering all relevant elements of the microstructure. No systematic effort was made to investigate the evolution of microstructures under conditions of long term creep. In the present study the evolution of the microstructure of a 12% Cr tempered martensite ferritic steel was investigated under conditions of long term aging and creep. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) techniques were used to characterize materials from interrupted creep tests (0.5%, 1%, 1.6% and rupture at 11.9%; creep conditions: 550°C, 120 MPa, rupture time: 139 971 h). It is shown that subgrains coarsen, that the close correlation between carbides and subgrain boundaries loosens during long term creep, and that the frequency of small angle boundaries increases. In addition, the evolution of dislocation densities during long term aging and creep was studied using high angle annular dark field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). During aging the dislocation density remains constant, while during long term creep the dislocation density continuously decreases. All these elementary deformation processes have already been discussed in short term creep studies. The present study shows that they also govern long term creep, however, during long term creep, precipitation and coarsening reactions occur which are not observed during short term creep. Cr rich M23C6, VX carbides and Laves phase were identified as the major precipitates in the microstructure of the 12% Chromium tempered martensite ferritic steel. Their chemical compositions, sizes, volume fractions and number densities were evaluated in all interrupted specimens. M23C6 particles coarsen and establish their equilibrium concentration after 51072 hours. VX particles are stable. The Laves phase particles do not reach thermodynamic equilibrium as they form and grow during long term creep. This is due to Silicon which is found in the Laves phase particles and which diffuses slowly in the steel matrix.

With China becoming a major force in steel research and development, this book highlights the work of a group from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led by the first four authors. This group has the ideal knowledge base for writing this updated book on heat-resistant steels. The fifth author, Sha, based in the UK, has been collaborating with the Chinese group since 2009 and is the lead or sole author of four research books, all published in English. The last book, “Steels: from materials science to structural engineering,” was published by Springer in 2013. Within two months of its publication, researchers at the University of Science and Technology Liaoning had requested translation of the book into Chinese. Springer obliged, and the Chinese version was published by the Metallurgical Industry Press, Beijing, in August 2014. Sha has organized and completed the writing of the proposed book, though the main research was done in China.

New engineering materials, techniques and applications are constantly being researched and developed, and keeping up to speed with the latest advances is crucial for engineers if they are to successfully address the challenges they face in their work. This book presents the selected proceedings of MMSE2023, the 9th International Conference on Advances in Machinery, Materials Science and Engineering Applications, jointly organized by the SAE-Supmeca, France and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and held on 22 and 23 July 2023 in Wuhan, China. For the past 12 years, this annual conference has collated recent advances and experiences, identified emerging trends and provided a platform for participants from academia and industry to exchange information and views, helping to address the world’s machinery and engineering challenges. The book contains 4 sections: mechanical engineering, material science and manufacturing technology; electrical engineering, automation and control; modeling, simulation and optimization techniques in engineering; and advanced engineering technologies and applications. A total of 241 submissions were received for MMSE2023, of which 151 papers were selected for the conference and for publication by means of a rigorous international peer-review process. These papers present exciting ideas and methods that will open novel research directions for different communities. Offering a current overview of the latest research and applications in machinery and materials-science engineering, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.
