In both academic and industrial locations, the study of the structure property relationships of multilayered thin films has become an area of significant interest for investigation and discovery. As layer-multiplying coextrusion continues to evolve into the nanoscale regime, new opportunities arise to discover unique properties controlled by interfacial or confinement induced phenomena. The first part of the thesis (Chapter 2) explores a series of isotactic polypropylene and nylon 6 blends with silsesquioxane (POSS) additives, which are layered to nanometer thicknesses within multilayered films, to test the effects of confinement upon polymer property modification. POSS has been previously shown to enhance the properties of polymer matrices in which the POSS molecules have been grafted to, or copolymerized within the chain, but there is a lack of understanding in melt-blend systems. The second and third parts of the thesis (Chapters 3 and 4), investigates various strategies to improving the gas barrier properties in multilayered polymer films. In Chapter 3, ultra-low glass transition temperature phosphate glasses (Pglass) are used as inorganic fillers within maleated polypropylene, with the goal of elongating the Pglass particles into high aspect ratio platelets upon biaxial orientation. In comparison to14previous work with a higher Tg Pglass, the newer Pglass was expected to possess improved drawing properties, yielding oriented films with higher aspect ratio platelets, and thus enhanced barrier properties. The Pglass, however, formed phase separated aggregates, resulting in the formation of voids upon drawing. In Chapter 3, a slightly different strategy was utilized to obtain improvements to film barrier properties, which involved the infusion of oxygen scavenging Palladium (Pd) nanoparticles into the polymer matrix. Infusion of as little as 4 x 10-5 vol.% Pd into multilayered films resulted in the reduction of oxygen permeability by 3-4 orders of magnitude. The combination of metal nanoparticles dispersed throughout the polymer free volume, with the added effect of nano-scale Pd films deposited at layer interfaces, has yielded thin, flexible and transparent multilayered films for potential applications such as flexible organic electronics encapsulation.

Treatise on Materials Science and Technology, Volume 24: Preparation and Properties of Thin Films covers the progress made in the preparation of thin films and the corresponding study of their properties. The book discusses the preparation and property correlations in thin film; the variation of microstructure of thin films; and the molecular beam epitaxy of superlattices in thin film. The text also describes the epitaxial growth of silicon structures (thermal-, laser-, and electron-beam-induced); the characterization of grain boundaries in bicrystalline thin films; and the mechanical properties of thin films on substrates. The ion beam modification of thin film; the use of thin alloy films for metallization in microelectronic devices; and the fabrication and physical properties of ultrasmall structures are also encompassed. Materials scientists and materials engineers will find the book invaluable.

The study of the relationship between the structure, morphology and properties of polymer films has significantly progressed in recent years through the use of a number of phyiscal techniques - some new and some old. These methods include small and large angle x-ray diffraction, bire fringence, light scattering, infrared dichroism, fluorescence polarization, light and electron microscopy and interferrometry. This collection of papers, most of which were presented at a symposium at the Boston American Chemical Society Meeting in April, 1972, represent a collection of recent studies using many of these methods by some of the leading scientists in their fields. It is evident that these various techniques permit the study of various aspects of film structure such as crystal structure and orientation, amorphous orientation, the interrelation of crystalline and amorphous regions in lamellar, fibrillar, and spherulitic superstructure and the relationshi. p of these structural variables to the mechanical and optical properties of the films. Film structure is sufficiently complex that a complete understanding of the relationship between structure and properties will come from the employment of a combination of several of these methods. vii CONTENTS Optical Studies of the Morphology of Polymer Films ••• • • 1 Richard S. Physics of Thin Films: Advances in Research and Development, Volume 6 reviews the rapid progress that has been made in research and development concerning the physics of thin films, with emphasis on metallic films. Topics covered include anodic oxide films, thin metal films and wires, and multilayer magnetic films. This volume is comprised of five chapters and begins with a discussion on the dielectric properties and the technique of plasma anodization which are relevant to the applications of anodic oxide films in electronic devices. Conduction, polarization, and dielectric breakdown effects are also considered. The next chapter examines studies on size-dependent electrical conduction in thin metal films and wires, paying particular attention to both classical and quantum size effects and some of the anisotropic characteristics of epitaxial metal films. The reader is then introduced to the optical properties of metal films and interactions in multilayer magnetic films. This text concludes with a chapter that looks at diffusion in metallic films and presents experimental results for phase-forming systems, miscible systems, and lateral diffusion. This monograph will be of value to students and practitioners of physics, especially those interested in thin films.

The broad field of thin film technology is based first of all on the film growth processes in general. The concepts of crystal structure and defects in crystalline thin films such as grain boundaries, dislocations and vacancies are examined. The general nature of film growth from atoms equilibrating with the service, through the initial stages of growth to film coalescence and zone models is also within the scope of this book as are evaporation, sputter deposition and chemical vapour deposition. Thin films are widely used in microelectronics, chemistry and a wide array of related fields. This book offers new research in this exploding field.

Stress Evolution During Growth And Atomic Scale Surface Structure Effects In Transition Metal Thin Films written by Cody Alden Friesen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with categories.

Thin films are defined by an extremely high ratio of the in-plane dimensions to the thickness, resulting in very high surface-to-volume ratios. For this reason, the surface characteristics of a film play an important role in the properties of the film as a whole. This research focused on the connections between the properties and the surface state of metallic thin films. High resolution in-situ stress measurements were made during the ultra-high vacuum evaporative deposition of polycrystalline Cu films and homoepitaxial (111)-oriented Cu and Ag films. The measurements were enabled through the development of two high resolution in-situ stress monitoring devices that minimized sample placement and vibrational error through compact and monolithic ultra-high vacuum compatible designs. These devices allowed in-situ stress measurements with unprecedented sensitivities while the device electronics enabled the study of systems in real-time with high data acquisition rates. Measurements were made during growth and interruptions of growth as the films formed and thickened. In the earliest stages of a growth cycle, when only a small fraction of a monolayer is deposited, the elastic component of the adatom-surface interaction dominates the stress evolution. The early stage observations are analyzed through a first- order expansion of the thermodynamic surface stress which allows for direct extraction and measurement of the force-dipole associated with the adatom-surface interaction.
