Thin films have an extremely broad range of applications from electronics and optics to new materials and devices. Collaborative and multidisciplinary efforts from physicists, materials scientists, engineers and others have established and advanced a field with key pillars constituting (i) the synthesis and processing of thin films, (ii) the understanding of physical properties in relation to the nanometer scale, (iii) the design and fabrication of nano-devices or devices with thin film materials as building blocks, and (iv) the design and construction of novel tools for characterization of thin films.Against the backdrop of the increasingly interdisciplinary field, this book sets off to inform the basics of thin film physics and thin film devices. Readers are systematically introduced to the synthesis, processing and application of thin films; they will also study the formation of thin films, their structure and defects, and their various properties — mechanical, electrical, semiconducting, magnetic, and superconducting. With a primary focus on inorganic thin film materials, the book also ventures on organic materials such as self-assembled monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett films. This book will be effective as a teaching or reference material in the various disciplines, ranging from Materials Science and Engineering, Electronic Science and Engineering, Electronic Materials and Components, Semiconductor Physics and Devices, to Applied Physics and more. The original Chinese publication has been instrumental in this purpose across many Chinese universities and colleges.

Physics of Thin Films: Advances in Research and Development, Volume 12 reviews advances that have been made in research and development concerning the physics of thin films. This volume covers a wide range of preparative approaches, physics phenomena, and applications related to thin films. This book is comprised of four chapters and begins with a discussion on metal coatings and protective layers for front surface mirrors used at various angles of incidence from the ultraviolet to the far infrared. Thin-film materials and deposition conditions suitable for minimizing reflectance changes with angle of incidence are described, along with novel oxide protective coatings with enhanced chemical stability and mechanical durability. The next chapter offers a comprehensive treatment of photoemissive materials. After giving a rather detailed review of the physics of photoemission, the main classes of thin-film photoemitters, including Ag-O-Cs, alkali antimonides, and negative-electron affinity photocathodes, are considered. A description of field-assisted cathodes potentially suitable for wavelengths beyond 1.1 micrometers, such as transferred-electron structures and field-emission arrays, is also given. The reader is then introduced to spray pyrolysis and the solution growth technique for chemical solution deposition of inorganic films. This text concludes with a chapter on plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of thin films, paying particular attention to the experimental conditions required for a range of element and compound materials as well as some of the unusual film properties and structures achieved by this approach. This monograph will be useful to students and practitioners of physics, especially those interested in thin films.

Based on lecture notes that have been used successfully by the authors for the past 10 years, with revisions made each year, this book is aimed at graduate students as well as professionals and researchers involved in thin film physics and technology. It is concise, comprehensive and well organized. The first part of the book introduces the concept, describes the various deposition procedures and illustrates PVD methods, evaporation and sputtering. The basic physical processes of film formation are then analyzed and formulated, including methods for monitoring and measuring film thickness. This book also shows how the subject matter connects with, relates and applies to other fields. In the second part of the book, 3 special topics ? ferromagnetic films, diffusion in thin films and mechanical properties of thin films ? are discussed.Given its wide scope, this book is relevant not just to those involved in materials science but also to engineers as well.

The present monograph represents itself as a tutorial to the ?eld of optical properties of thin solid ?lms. It is neither a handbook for the thin ?lm prac- tioner, noranintroductiontointerferencecoatingsdesign, norareviewonthe latest developments in the ?eld. Instead, it is a textbook which shall bridge the gap between ground level knowledge on optics, electrodynamics, qu- tummechanics, andsolidstatephysicsononehand, andthemorespecialized level of knowledge presumed in typical thin ?lm optical research papers on the other hand. In writing this preface, I feel it makes sense to comment on three points, which all seem to me equally important. They arise from the following (- tually interconnected) three questions: 1. Who can bene?t from reading this book? 2. What is the origin of the particular material selection in this book? 3. Who encouraged and supported me in writing this book? Let me start with the ?rst question, the intended readership of this book. It should be of use for anybody, who is involved into the analysis of - tical spectra of a thin ?lm sample, no matter whether the sample has been prepared for optical or other applications. Thin ?lm spectroscopy may be r- evant in semiconductor physics, solar cell development, physical chemistry, optoelectronics, and optical coatings development, to give just a few ex- ples. The book supplies the reader with the necessary theoretical apparatus for understanding and modelling the features of the recorded transmission and re?ection spectra.

Physics of Thin Films is one of the longest running continuing series in thin film science, consisting of 25 volumes since 1963. The series contains quality studies of the properties of various thin films materials and systems. In order to be able to reflect the development of today's science and to cover all modern aspects of thin films, the series, starting with Volume 20, has moved beyond the basic physics of thin films. It now addresses the most important aspects of both inorganic and organic thin films, in both their theoretical as well as technological aspects. Therefore, in order to reflect the modern technology-oriented problems, the title has been slightly modified from Physics of Thin Films to Thin Films. This volume, part of the Thin Films Series, has been wholly written by two authors instead of showcasing several edited manuscripts.
