Excerpt from Evolution, Racial and Habitudinal There is, also, another character in which species Of some of these genera often difler from each other, in regard to which natural selec tion has never been shown to be the controlling factor. I refer to the character of the coil of the shell, which may be dextral in one species, Sinistral in another, and either dextral or Sinistral in a third. As long as it is impossible to give any reason why a species would not be equally successful if every individual possessed the reverse form from that it now has, it is unreasonable that we Should attribute the pres ent form to the influence Of natural selection. The theory that there is great advantage for the species in having all the individuals coiled in the same way, if proved, would in no way explain why certain species are always dextral and certain others are always Sinistral, while some well-established species present large masses of individuals of each form. I think it will some day be shown that snails of opposite forms, though of the same race, are in capable Of mating with each other, and we already know that each individual is both male and female. If, then, an unusual sport should produce, in the same family, or on the same tree, two individuals of the reverse form from their parents, we should have a completely segregated variety established in the original home, while exposed to the same environment and using it in the same way, and its new char acter conferring no benefit. In this groundbreaking study, John Thomas Gulick offers a challenging and provocative analysis of the relationship between race, habitual behavior, and evolutionary change. Drawing on examples from both the natural world and human societies, he argues that segregation is a key driver of evolutionary adaptation, and that racial differences in behavior and biology are the result of long-term patterns of segregation and reproductive isolation. No scientific traveler was more influenced by the Pacific than Charles Darwin, and his legacy in the region remains unparalleled. Yet the extent of the Pacific's impact on the thought of Darwin and those who followed him has not been sufficiently grasped. In this volume of essays, sixteen scholars explore the many dimensions - biological, geological, anthropological, social, and political - of Darwinism in the Pacific. Fired by Darwinian ideas, nineteenth-century naturalists within and around the Pacific rim worked to further Darwin's programs in their own research: in Seattle, conchologist P. Brooks Randolph; in Honolulu, evolutionist John Thomas Gulick; in Adelaide, botanist Richard Schomburgk; and in Malaysia, biogeographer Alfred Russel Wallace. Lesser-known enthusiasts furnished Darwin with fresh material and replied to his endless inquiries, while young aspiring biologists from Cambridge tested Darwinian ideas directly in the "laboratory" of the Pacific. But the implications of Darwinism for the understanding of human nature and history turned it into a public theory as well as a scientific one. Anthropologists, geographers, missionaries, politicians, and social commentators - from Australia to Japan - all found ways to adapt Darwinism to their own agendas. Darwin's Laboratory demonstrates the variety and richness of Darwinian ideas in the Pacific and, in so doing, shows how the region functioned as a testing ground for the theory of evolution. Further, it illustrates how Darwinian ideas and their European contexts helped invent and define the particular conception we have of the Pacific. Both the general reader and the specialist will find controversy, illumination, and entertainment in this, the first book to probe the extent of Darwinism and Darwinian thinking in the Pacific.
