EXAMINING PHILOSOPHY ITSELF One of the most distinctive features of philosophy is self-reflection. Philosophers are not only concerned with metaphysical, epistemological, conceptual, ethical, and aesthetic issues of things around us, they also pay serious attention to the nature, value, methods, and development of philosophy itself. This book examines some of the most important metaphilosophical issues: Is philosophy progressive? Are metaphysical claims meaningful? What is the aim of philosophy? Should analytic metaphysics be replaced by naturalised metaphysics? What is the prospect of a digital approach to philosophy of science? Can poetry play a substantial role in philosophy? Examining Philosophy Itself will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in philosophy.

One of the foremost figures of Western intellectual thought in the late 19th century, John Stuart Mill offered up examinations of human rights, personal and societal rights and responsibilities, and the striving for individual happiness that continue to impact our philosophies, both private and political, to this day. In this comprehensive rebuttal to the thinking of a preeminent philosopher of his time-one now, ironically, best remembered for Mill's critique-Mill explains why Hamilton's views on the limitations of human knowledge were, to Mil's thinking, wrong, and in the process, lays out his own ideas on the freedom of human will. In this provocative volume is where we find Mill's doctrine of the "permanent possibility of sensation," which encompasses the mind's interaction with the external world. First published in 1865, this is a replica of the 1889 third edition, and will be of interest to students of Mill's philosophy, and to the development of philosophical thought in the 19th century. English philosopher and politician JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) served as an administrator in the East Indian Company from 1823 to 1858, and as a member of parliament from 1865 to 1868. Among his essays on a wide range of political and social thought are Principles of Political Economy (1848), Considerations on Representative Government (1861), and The Subjection of Women (1869).

Although often neglected, An Examination of the Philosophy of Bacon is crucial to understand the epistemological basis for Maistre's critique of modern science as well as his criticisms of other aspects of Enlightenment thought. Given Maistre's stature in the history of conservative thought, his critique of Bacon remains significant for what it tells us about Maistre's own thought, what it reveals about attitudes toward science in his time, and what it contributes to issues that are still debated today. The work also showcases Maistre's polemical skills and his powerful prose style. Richard Lebrun's annotated translation includes Maistre's complete text, an extensive introduction that places the work in context and provides a critical exposition and assessment of Maistre's criticisms of Bacon, biographical notes on persons cited or mentioned by Maistre, and a bibliography. Differences between Maistre's manuscript and the printed text, first published fifteen years after the author's death, are noted, and Maistre's numerous citations have been identified, verified, and translated, making this the only authoritative and fully accurate edition of the work in either French or English.

STEPHEN TOULMIN George Santayana used to insist that those who are ignorant of the history of thought are doomed to re-enact it. To this we can add a corollary: that those who are ignorant of the context of ideas are doom ed to misunderstand them. In a few self-contained fields such as pure mathematics, concepts and conceptual systems can perhaps be de tached from their historico-cultural situations; so that (for instance) a self-taught Ramanujan, living alone in India, mastered number theory to a point at which he could make major contributions to European mathematics. But elsewhere the situation is different - and, in philosophy, inevitably so. For philosophical ideas and problems confront us like geological specimens in situ; and, in the act of prising them free from their historical and cultural locations, we can too easily forget about the matrix in which they took shape, and end by impossing on them a sculptural form of our own making. Something of this kind has happened in the case of Ludwig Wittgen stein. For his philosophical work has commonly been seen as an episode in the development, either of mathematicallogic, or oftwentieth-century British philosophy. His associations with Frege and Russell, Moore and Waismann, have over-shadowed everything else in his cultural origins and intellectual concerns.

A new book released by the same philosopher who published The Basic Philosophy of Joshua Rovero and Essays on Civilizations - a philosophy book and a political treatise-manifesto, respectively - this book focuses on another domain other than philosophy and politics: Theology and Religious Studies! The Other Treatises by Joshua Kyle T. Rovero is a thought-provoking collection of essay-treatises that traverse the intricate realms of religion, philosophy, and political theory. This groundbreaking work engages with diverse ideologies, like Objectivism, Pancasila, and also engages with other religions less studied, such as Zunism, and Mithraism, while all the more introducing original concepts like Existential Idealism and The Political Funnel. Rovero’s compelling explorations bridge theology and philosophy, critiquing established ideas and proposing innovative frameworks for understanding human religious experience and human societal structures. His unique synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern insight illuminates the spiritual, ethical, and political dimensions of humanity. Each essay invites readers to critically engage with complex ideas and envision a world shaped by deeper philosophical inquiry. Through rigorous inquiry and bold perspectives, this book challenges the intellectual stagnancy of our era, offering a vision for a new renaissance in philosophical and theological discourse. Designed for scholars, thinkers, and seekers alike, The Other Treatises is not just a book—it’s a call to ignite a new renaissance of thought, transcending boundaries and inspiring transformative dialogue - a dialogue on how we view the notion of religion. This also contains one of the treatises that was supposed to be integrated in Essays on Civilization! {Book licensed under CC BY 4.0}
