This special issue of the Getty Research Journal comprises the most in-depth interdisciplinary look at Jackson Pollock's work to date. The result of a five-year research project, the volume is centered around Pollock's most important early painting, Mural (1943), the work that convinced the critic Clement Greenberg that Pollock was the key painter of his generation. Ten contributions by leading art historians, conservators, curators, and conservation scientists explore issues ranging from Pollock's inspiration from Surrealism and action photography to his relationship to architecture and regionalism. In particular, this collaborative study asked what the new tools of technical analysis and advanced imaging can do for art history, not just to answer factual questions but to guide interpretation. The cross-disciplinary investigation has resulted in significant further developments in our understanding of how Pollock was working, how his paintings were made, and how they changed over time. Overall, the issue provides alternative perspectives to the narratives that have dominated the critical and art historical literature on Pollock over the last seventy years.

Vision and Difference, published in 1988, is one of the most significant works in feminist visual culture arguing that feminist art history of is a political as well as academic endeavour. Pollock expresses how images are key to the construction of sexual difference, both in visual culture and in broader societal experiences. Her argument places feminist theory at the centre of art history, proffering the idea that a feminist understanding of art history is an analysis of art history itself. This text remains key not only to understand feminine art historically but to grasp strategies for representation in the future and adding to its contemporary value.

Life doesn’t always go the way we hope it will. Whether it’s singleness, childlessness or some other big disappointment, it’s hard to be content when life lets us down. Author Jennie Pollock knows what it's like to feel discontent. With warmth and honesty, she answers common doubts that arise when life doesn't go the way we had hoped: Is God good? Is he enough? Is he worth it? She walks readers through the process of taking our eyes off the things we wish we had and instead enjoying the character of the God we do have—a God who is good, who meets all our needs, and whose promises are worth the wait. Drawing on encouragements from the Bible and the stories of others, this book helps readers to trust in God’s plan for their lives and enjoy true contentment through a genuine conviction that Jesus is better than even our most keenly-felt hopes and longings for this life.

Jackson Pollock written by Evelyn Toynton and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-24 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Jackson Pollock (1912–1956) not only put American art on the map with his famous "drip paintings," he also served as an inspiration for the character of Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire—the role that made Marlon Brando famous. Like Brando, Pollock became an icon of rebellion in 1950s America, and the brooding, defiant persona captured in photographs of the artist contributed to his celebrity almost as much as his notorious paintings did. In the years since his death in a drunken car crash, Pollock's hold on the public imagination has only increased. He has become an enduring symbol of the tormented artist—our American van Gogh. In this highly engaging book, Evelyn Toynton examines Pollock's itinerant and poverty-stricken childhood in the West, his encounters with contemporary art in Depression-era New York, and his years in the run-down Long Island fishing village that, ironically, was transformed into a fashionable resort by his presence. Placing the artist in the context of his time, Toynton also illuminates the fierce controversies that swirled around his work and that continue to do so. Pollock's paintings captured the sense of freedom and infinite possibility unique to the American experience, and his life was both an American rags-to-riches story and a darker tale of the price paid for celebrity, American style.
