"In this action research project, I adapted Keene's comprehension rubric (2010) and paired it with a weekly reading fluency assessment in order to examine how a multidimensional assessment informed instruction and supported elementary students' reading comprehension growth when both oral and written responses were examined. Over a three month period, I assessed students with the adapted comprehension rubric assessment immediately following the fluency assessment. At the end of the intervention, students' responses to a short form of the assessment demonstrated a significant increase on a paired t test. Students' responses to the long form also demonstrated a 7.4% increase on a paired t test, but the increase was not significant. When students written responses were examined, they also demonstrated an increase of 16.5% on a paired t test. Finally, students' were administered the Developmental Reading Assessment as a pre and posttest. The results of this assessment demonstrate that students increased their reading comprehension ability significantly by 7.5% on a paired t test. The finding of this study support previous research by Valencia and Pearson (1988) and Teale (2009), which states that reading assessments needs to focus on the coordination of reading skills and provide meaningful data to inform instruction."--author's abstract.

Research into reading development and reading disabilities has been dominated by phonologically guided theories for several decades. In this volume, the authors of 11 chapters report on a wide array of current research topics, examining the scope, limits and implications of a phonological theory. The chapters are organized in four sections. The first concerns the nature of the relations between script and speech that make reading possible, considering how different theories of phonology may illuminate the implication of these relations for reading development and skill. The second set of chapters focuses on phonological factors in reading acquisition that pertain to early language development, effects of dialect, the role of instruction, and orthographic learning. The third section identifies factors beyond the phonological that may influence success in learning to read by examining cognitive limitations that are sometimes co-morbid with reading disabilities, contrasting the profiles of specific language impairment and dyslexia, and considering the impact of particular languages and orthographies on language acquisition. Finally, in the fourth section, behavioral-genetic and neurological methods are used to further develop explanations of reading differences and early literacy development. The volume is an essential resource for researchers interested in the cognitive foundations of reading and literacy, language and communication disorders, or psycholinguistics; and those working in reading disabilities, learning disabilities, special education, and the teaching of reading.

High-stakes reading comprehension assessment is commonplace in schools, given the increased emphasis on accountability for educational outcomes (Barksdale-Ladd & Thomas, 2000). Yet, not all assessment practices have empirical support. This two-study dissertation examined areas related to reading comprehension assessment: test-taking strategies and question format. Both studies employed eye tracking technology in order to examine participants' underlying reading comprehension behavior. Due to conflicting findings regarding the effectiveness of test-taking strategies during reading comprehension assessment (e.g., Wiesendanger, Birlem, & Wollenberg, 1982), the purpose of Chapter 2 was to investigate elementary students' reading behavior during a reading comprehension assessment under typical conditions and when required to read the passage first (PF) or read the questions first (QF). Participants were 84 third- and fourth-grade students who first completed a control condition and then completed PF and QF conditions in randomized order. Eye movement data revealed that the QF strategy was generally less efficient than the PF strategy. The purpose of Chapter 3 was to investigate the impact of anticipated question format (i.e., Multiple-Choice; MC or Short Answer; SA) on elementary students' eye movements during reading. This study addressed concerns that MC questions may alter what reading assessments measure (Martinez, 1999; Rupp, Ferne, & Choi, 2006). Additionally, this study examined the influence of SA questions on reading behavior, given that new reading assessments will include more SA questions (Polikoff, 2014). Participants included 87 third- and fourth-grade students who were randomly assigned to the MC or SA condition. Condition assignment dictated the type of questions participants expected to answer after reading a passage. Results indicated that participants in the SA condition engaged in different eye movements than participants in the MC condition. Overall, this dissertation extends research in the fields of school psychology and cognitive psychology. Implications of the studies reported upon in Chapters 2 and 3 may inform future studies regarding the validity of reading comprehension assessment practices. Implications of findings from the two studies for classroom practices were also discussed.

Reading Body written by Joyce Tam and has been published by VDM Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Social Science categories.

This work examines the physicality of reading. Scholarship in fields such as reader-response criticism and book history often neglect the body and the physicality of the processes they study - examining reading as a disembodied act. However, reading relates reflexively to our texts, our cultures, and our bodies. By examining these relationships, I study how reading inhabits our bodies both through how we read and through how we are read. Since bodies are specific and personal, and knowing that I cannot claim objectivity about the process, I include a personal narrative as well as images of other readers. The physical experience of reading changes us and our perceptions. In light of new media developments, which are already changing reading practices, we must try to gain a more thorough, rounded understanding of what reading is in order to have some stake in what it is to become.

Abstract: This quantitative study examined the relationship between third- and fourth-grade Latina/o students’ reading attitudes, home literacy environment, and reading performance. The current study sought to add to the growing literature on the impact affective variables, such as reading attitudes and home literacy environment, have on culturally and linguistically diverse student groups. Participants of the study were recruited from an urban elementary school in Southern California. Findings indicate Latina/o student participants held overall negative attitudes toward reading and reading attitudes were found to be a better predictor of student reading performance across grade level than the measure of home literacy environment. Overall, measures of reading attitude and home literacy environment appear to be valuable tools in providing additional insight as to why a student may be struggling in their reading performance. Limitations and areas for future research are discussed.

When you Read Like a Writer (RLW) you work to identify some of the choices the author made so that you can better understand how such choices might arise in your own writing. The idea is to carefully examine the things you read, looking at the writerly techniques in the text in order to decide if you might want to adopt similar (or the same) techniques in your writing. You are reading to learn about writing. Instead of reading for content or to better understand the ideas in the writing (which you will automatically do to some degree anyway), you are trying to understand how the piece of writing was put together by the author and what you can learn about writing by reading a particular text. As you read in this way, you think about how the choices the author made and the techniques that he/she used are influencing your own responses as a reader. What is it about the way this text is written that makes you feel and respond the way you do?
