Trauma, trauma-related disorders, substance use, and addictive disorders often co-occur, and frequently play a role in the problems and issues that social workers contend with in their practice with individuals, families, and communities. Research shows that there is a relationship between trauma-related symptoms and problematic use of substances and other addictive behaviors. Individuals who experience these co-occurring problems have better outcomes when their issues are addressed with integrated treatment approaches. Trauma-informed care and trauma-specific treatment are therefore important components of effective social work interventions. This book examines various types of trauma, such as intergenerational trauma, adverse childhood events, childhood sexual abuse, and minority stress, amongst various populations and settings, including Native Americans, homeless youth, drug court participants, and LGB adolescents. It also explores the challenges in delivering trauma services in outpatient addiction treatment settings. Furthermore, it provides practical information on how to implement trauma-informed approaches in addiction treatment, and offers insights into the experience of a trauma survivor who is also recovering from a substance use disorder. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Social Work Practice in the Addictions.

Theories covered include motivational interviewing, moral theory, developmental theory, cognitive behavioral theories, attachment theory, and sociological theory. Each chapter focuses on a single theory, describing its basic tenets, philosophical underpinnings, key concepts, and strengths and weaknesses. Each chapter also shows how practitioners using the theory would respond to a common case study, giving readers the opportunity to compare how the different theoretical approaches are applied to client situations. A final chapter discusses approaches to relapse prevention.

A school, whether run by the government or a private institution, is established to prepare adolescents for adulthood. In some regions, some religious societies have established a comprehensive educational institution supported by their religious competencies requirement in their curriculum, along with the national curriculum. Adolescence is a period of life that ranges from 10 to 19 years old and expands from school to the early phase of university. Adolescents are considered highly susceptible to mental health issues. Anxiety, depression, behavioral disorders, and suicidal attempts have been shown to increase before the age of 24. There is a myriad of factors that can contribute to the development of mental health disorders in this context, including family, parenting style, and bullying from peers/teachers. Failing to address contributing factors may hinder adolescents from fulfilling and sustaining healthy and productive adult lives.

Underserved written by Ja'Ron Smith and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-05 with Political Science categories.

This book provides a roadmap for modern-day conservatives to advance President Lincoln’s vision to help underserved communities across our country. Underserved is a tangible blueprint for today’s conservative who understands the need for a new and viable political plan of action—one that addresses the needs of the underserved communities that make up these United States of America. Utilizing the concept of the “Party of Lincoln” and the conservative principles set forth over centuries by the movement’s most recognized thought leaders, Underserved examines President Lincoln’s intentions for Reconstruction, President Grant’s aims to implement that vision, and Frederick Douglass’s influence on both men in the process. Underserved brings home the very real impact of a failed plan that has had negative implications on modern America, whether conservative, moderate, or liberal. With this historical plan as the linchpin for creating a framework that services disenfranchised communities, authors Ja’Ron K. Smith and Chris Pilkerton challenge conservative policy makers to employ strategies that mirror those originally presented over 160 years ago, while making necessary concessions for its modern audience—all of which are tied not only to the vision of these American icons, but does so in the context of traditional conservative thinkers who laid the groundwork for the modern-day Republican Party. From education and workforce development to criminal justice reform and healthcare disparities, Underserved makes a bold statement about what is necessary to see a change in the current state of affairs and presents a realistic action plan to make it happen. Underserved identifies the foundational role of key institutions in implementing this proposed plan and ties in the economic and social components necessary for the plan to be met with success—while stressing the critical components of Intentionality, Trust, Collaboration, Outcomes, and Use of Data. This approach makes Underserved a vital read for politicians on both sides of the aisle as much as it is for everyday voters, agents of change, and all those ready to see a plan that will produce results.

Mean Lives Mean Laws written by Susan F. Sharp and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-20 with Social Science categories.

Oklahoma has long held the dubious honor of having the highest female incarceration rate in the country, nearly twice the national average. In this compelling new book, sociologist Susan Sharp sets out to discover just what has gone so wrong in the state of Oklahoma—and what that might tell us about trends in female incarceration nationwide. The culmination of over a decade of original research, Mean Lives, Mean Laws exposes a Kafkaesque criminal justice system, one that has no problem with treating women as collateral damage in the War on Drugs or with stripping female prisoners of their parental rights. Yet it also reveals the individual histories of women who were jailed in Oklahoma, providing intimate portraits of their lives before, during, and after their imprisonment. We witness the impoverished and abusive conditions in which many of these women were raised; we get a vivid portrait of their everyday lives behind bars; and we glimpse the struggles that lead many ex-convicts to fall back into the penal system. Through an innovative methodology that combines statistical rigor with extensive personal interviews, Sharp shows how female incarceration affects not only individuals, but also families and communities. Putting a human face on a growing social problem, Mean Lives, Mean Laws raises important questions about both the state of Oklahoma and the state of the nation.
