A "fascinating and provocative" story (The Washington Post) of high stakes competition between two titans that shows how the electric chair developed through an effort by one nineteenth-century electric company to discredit the other. In 1882, Thomas Edison ushered in the “age of electricity” when he illuminated Manhattan’s Pearl Street with his direct current (DC) system. Six years later, George Westinghouse lit up Buffalo with his less expensive alternating current (AC). The two men quickly became locked in a fierce rivalry, made all the more complicated by a novel new application for their product: the electric chair. When Edison set out to persuade the state of New York to use Westinghouse’s current to execute condemned criminals, Westinghouse fought back in court, attempting to stop the first electrocution and keep AC from becoming the “executioner’s current.” In this meticulously researched account of the ensuing legal battle and the horribly botched first execution, Moran raises disturbing questions not only about electrocution, but about about our society’s tendency to rely on new technologies to answer moral questions.

In 1879 Thomas Edison unveiled a world-changing invention - electricity, an invisible force that produced light, powered streetcars and carried telephone conversations. A decade later Edison, formerly an avowed opponent of the death penalty, championed the creation of a completely different sort of device - the electric chair. Edison promoted the electric chair for reasons that remain controversial to this day. Was he genuinely concerned to find a humane alternative to the gallows? Was it part of his bitter battle with rival George Westinghouse for commercial dominance? Or, in fact, was he warning the public of real dangers posed by the high-voltage wires that looped above America's streets? In Edison & the Electric Chair Mark Essig delivers a provocative new examination of Edison - the man and the inventor. He also explores America's fascination with technology and violent death.

Ideas have no boundaries either way - this can come from unexpected source and this can be for any problem. Imagine a triangle where idea sits in the centre and three sides represent man, machine and resources. Without ideas all sides are useless and in absence of idea these sides are worthless. Everyday thousands of ideas gets obsolete as new ideas come into being. Because of this the world keeps on updating products and processes on a continuous basis. In a country like India where resources are limited and red tapeism is at its peak, hardly any internationally marketable idea would be able to see the light of the day. The result is that not many worthwhile inventions are seen from India..The story relates to highly complex sophisticated oil industry equipment, which only two companies manufactured in the world and they did not sell it but gave it on rent only. Therefore except the manufactures no one had access to its design. The boy who comes up with idea while in University, worked tirelessly against all odds, makes a prototype; test it in the deep sea and get his idea patented in USA, Canada, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, France, Germany, Japan and erstwhile USSR. An idea which comes to mind in 1965 was patented 1985 and that is remarkable in fast changing environment. He was born in middle class family in a small town. He could not opt for engineering because of poor marks in mathematics and physics. He did his Masters in Applied Geology, a subject which has nothing akin to engineering designs. He was exceptionally good in connecting with people who may be a peon or a Chairman of the company. This ability immensely helped him in getting support from people of various departments in the organization and outside. He believed that no one can motivate or de-motivates you - the motivation has to come from within. "If you want to go fast, go alone but if you want to go far go together." This philosophy remained the essence of his success. He has proven amply in this book that you may know nothing about engineering, electronics, and optics or anything else but still you can invent equipments and machines which have complex technology within. He said most of the inventions in the past came from uneducated people who believed that nothing is perfect and therefore, there are unlimited possibilities of improving things in all areas. He has proved that an inventor is one who comes with logical idea and there are experts in all fields who can successfully execute it. An inventor is just a thinker who can find solutions to any problem, which may not be perfect in the beginning but can be improved continuously. This book will tell you how a geologist could design better equipments than those marketed by American, German, French and Russian companies for oil and gas industry. Ideas are ideas - they can be for any area or any problem. He was invited by Air force headquarters during 1971 war to tell them the techniques of dropping bombs at the target. When, someone asked 'how hard he had to work to get a doctorate degree?' His reply was one week and 42 pages only. The book takes you along on this journey to prove that for success all you need is the ability to think and connecting with people
