Shaggy Crowns written by Nora Goldschmidt and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-12 with History categories.

Shaggy Crowns is the first book-length study in almost a hundred years of the relationship between Rome's two great epic poems. Quintus Ennius was once the monumental epic poet of Republican Rome, 'the father of Roman poetry'. However, around one hundred and fifty years after his epic Annales first appeared, it was replaced decisively by Virgil's Aeneid, and now survives only in fragments. Looking at the intersections between intertextuality and the appropriations of cultural memory, Goldschmidt considers the relationship between Rome's two great canonical epics. She focuses on how - in the use of archaism, the presentation of landscape, embedded memories of the Punic Wars, and fragments of exempla - Virgil's poem appropriates and re-writes the myths and memories which Ennius had enshrined in Roman epic. Goldschmidt argues that Virgil was not just a slicker 'new poet', but constructed himself as an older 'archaic poet' of the deepest memories of the Roman past, ultimately competing for the 'shaggy crown' of Ennius.

Livy S Exemplary History written by Jane D. Chaplin and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-11-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

The idea that it is possible to learn from history is fascinating, but also complex. What exactly can you learn from the past? Does it repeat itself? If it does, how can you prevent repetition of evil and ensure repetition of good? Livy's History of Rome is all about people learning or failing to learn from the past, so in many ways his work is an extended exploration of this problem. In this book Dr Chaplin starts from Livy's programmatic claim that history offers examples of good and bad conduct. Where previous studies have focused on the meaning of exemplary episodes and characters in isolation, this treatment traces the way historical figures try to interpret the past to their advantage. In doing so, the book demonstrates Livy's awareness of the shifting relevance of history and argues that a narrative organized around exempla allowed Livy, poised between the collapse of the Republic and the foundation of the Empire, to make the Romans' past meaningful for their future.

Suetonius The Biographer written by Tristan Power and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with History categories.

The biographer Suetonius is one of the most fascinating writers of ancient Rome, but he is rarely afforded serious critical attention. This volume of new essays focuses on the various aspects of Suetonius' work, from his lost writing on Roman courtesans to his imperial portraits of the Caesars. Beginning with an introduction that assesses the originality of Suetonius as a writer and situates the essays within the context of debates and controversies over his biographical form, the collection addresses the issues surrounding his style, themes, and early influence on literature in three parts. The first part discusses formal features of Suetonian biography, such as his literary techniques, manners of citation and quotation, and devices of allusion and closure. The middle section is devoted to readings of the individual Lives, treating several topics - from Suetonius' decision to begin his collection with Julius Caesar, to fictional elements in his death scene of the emperor Caligula, to the theme of solitude in his Life of Domitian. The last part examines the ways in which Suetonius transgresses the boundaries of ancient biography by looking at his influence on epistolographers, antiquarians, commentators, and later biographers. This volume is essential reading for anyone who wants to know why Suetonius' Lives are such a unique and powerful medium for the stories of ancient Rome, and how they became the primary model for later biography.

Classical Constructions written by S. J. Heyworth and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-04 with Literary Criticism categories.

Classical Constructions is a collection of ground-breaking and scholarly papers on Latin literature by a number of distinguished Classicists, produced in memory of Don Fowler, who died in 1999 at the age of 46. The authors were all inspired by the desire to commemorate a beloved colleague and friend and have produced papers of great freshness and insight. The essays, including that by Don Fowler himself, are much concerned with the reception of the classical world, extending into the realms of modern philosophy, art history, and cultural studies. There are fundamental studies of Horace's style and Ovid's exile. The volume is unusual in the informality of the style of a number of pieces, and the openness with which the contributors have reminisced about the honorand and reflected on his early death.

Writing Performance And Authority In Augustan Rome written by Michele Lowrie and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10-15 with History categories.

In Writing, Performance, and Authority in Augustan Rome Michele Lowrie examines how the Romans conceived of their poetic media. Song has links to the divine through prophecy, while writing offers a more quotidian, but also more realistic way of presenting what a poet does. In a culture of highly polished book production where recitation was the fashion, to claim to sing or to write was one means of self-definition. Lowrie assesses the stakes of poetic claims to one medium or another. Generic definition is an important factor. Epic and lyric have traditional associations with song, while the literary epistle is obviously written. But issues of poetic interpretability and power matter even more. The choice of medium contributes to the debate about the relative potency of rival discourses, specifically poetry, politics, and the law. Writing could offer an escape from the social and political demands of the moment by shifting the focus toward the readership of posterity.
