With their return, the elves have built the city of Second Home, a place of learning, open to all who would come to study. For Raven, a young Shadow Elf historian, and one of the few elves born on the mainland, it's an opportunity for her to research the truth about the first child born to the elves, Umbral K'hul, a god-like boy whose attempted patricide and subsequent banishment triggered a civil war that fractured the Elven Nation. A more sinister presence sees the elves' return as a chance to strike, filling the beautiful city with an army of chaos and death. But along with the demons, strides another: after ten thousand years of exile, Umbral K'hul has escaped his prison. Now, the elves' greatest pariah and an untested heroine must face an enemy bent on genocide. In the process they will discover secrets their people have kept since the elves established First Home. Banishment In The Late Medieval Eastern Netherlands written by Edda Frankot and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022 with Europe categories.

This open access book analyses the practice of banishment and what it can tell us about the values of late medieval society concerning morally acceptable behaviour. It focuses on the Dutch town of Kampen and considers the exclusion of offenders through banishment and the redemption of individuals after their exile. Banishment was a common punishment in late medieval Europe, especially for sexual offences. In Kampen it was also meted out as a consequence of the non-payment of fines, after which people could arrange repayment schemes which allowed them to return. The books firstly considers the legal context of the practice of banishment, before discussing punishment in Kampen more generally. In the third chapter the legal practice of banishment as a punitive and coercive measure is discussed. The final chapter focuses on the redemption of exiles, either because their punishment was completed, or because they arranged for the payment of outstanding fines.

'Christina's level of research into characters, place and time to tell a powerful story of suffering and survival in an historical fiction is masterful' Heather Morris, author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz 'Gorgeous' Kristin Hannah, author of The Nightingale London, 1840. Evangeline has languished in Newgate prison for months, falsely accused of stealing her master's ring. Now beginning the long journey to Australia on a prison ship, she hopes for a new life for both her and her unborn child. On board she befriends Hazel, sentenced to seven years' transport for theft, whose own path will cross with an orphaned indigenous girl. The governor of Tasmania has 'adopted' Mathinna, but the family treat her more as a curiosity than a child. Amid hardships and cruelties, new life will take root in stolen soil and friendships will define lives, but only some will find their place on the other side of the world. 'Master storyteller Christina Baker Kline is at her best in this epic tale of Australia's complex history-a vivid and rewarding feat of both empathy and imagination. I loved this book' Paula McLain, bestselling author of The Paris Wife
