The Soviet Union confronted these same questions in the 1980s, and Artemy Kalinovsky’s history of the USSR’s nine-year struggle to extricate itself from Afghanistan and bring its troops home provides a sobering perspective on exit options in the region. What makes Kalinovsky’s intense account both timely and important is its focus not on motives for initiating the conflict but on the factors that prevented the Soviet leadership from ending a demoralizing war. When she arrived, she found two hundred thousand others attempting to flee the country. The crowds were too thick and aggressive for this 5'1" 95 pound woman to push through. She decided to dare the impossible; to circle back into the heart of Taliban country and to make a subtle escape to the northern border to the less hostile nation of Turkmenistan. In order to do so, she would have to cross, mountains, valleys, rivers, and Taliban security checkpoints.
