What should Christian discourse look like after philosophical modernity? In one manner or another the essays in this volume seek to confront and intellectually exorcise the prevailing elements of philosophical modernity, which are inherently transgressive disfigurations and refigurations of the Christian story of creation, sin, and redemption. This volume presents an overview of various aspects of the quite diverse philosophical developments that have taken place in Ireland, both past and present. With contributions by some of the leading thinkers in their field, this book is based, although not exclusively so, on papers given at a conference held at Maynooth University, Ireland, in 2012 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Irish Philosophical Society. Rather than treating philosophy in Ireland in a systematic and comprehensive way, the contributions give the reader a glimpse of the state of philosophy in Ireland today. They show that, from the beginning, and throughout the centuries, the philosophical tradition in Ireland has been characterised by dialogue. This dialogical aspect of Irish philosophising remains alive today. The book demonstrates how this engagement encompasses the past as interlocutor, as well as interactions with the philosophical debates that take place outside of Ireland, both on the continent and within the Anglo-American tradition. The volume puts forward a strong argument that the future of philosophy in Ireland should not move towards an ever-greater specialisation, thereby resulting in the isolation and impoverishment of individual philosophical traditions. Rather, it argues that the different traditions should remain, and should engage in dialogue with each other, with their philosophical and intellectual past, and stay steadfastly connected with the society around them.

The question of matter has been a quiet but enduring question in our desire to know being—and therefore to know ourselves—since we began to ask questions about the nature of being at all. Indeed, in the Timaeus, Plato writes that matter is only graspable “by some bastard reasoning.” The use of this evocative adjective is not meant simply to indicate that matter is bad or the source of all evil, but rather indicates matter’s “middleness”: not exactly being itself, but also not nonbeing simpliciter. Thus, thinking about matter cannot happen in the usual way. Ferdinand Ulrich is not a usual thinker and this book seeks to illuminate Ulrich’s radical way of thinking being and thinking being as gift, which is to say, it seeks to explain Ulrich’s metaphysics of creation. It does so in light of Ulrich’s understanding of matter, which has a central place in his work, and indeed is for Ulrich the test-case for whether any metaphysics is sufficiently radical.

During his career, the metaphysically minded journalist G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) made a number of remarkable predictions about the future, many of which have come true. He had no science of history or theory of progress, and he vehemently denied that what he was foretelling was inevitable in any way. This book offers a theological vision of learning informed by the mystagogical homilies of Ambrose of Milan, Cyril of Jerusalem, John Chrysostom, and Theodore of Mopsuestia. In dialogue with these four mystagogues, Hanna Lucas walks through the rites and liturgy surrounding baptism and the eucharist in order to establish a theological epistemology that sees knowledge as part of the “capacitation” of our nature for heavenly mysteries and union with God. The sacraments of initiation teach us that even the mundane aspects of knowledge, including the rudiments of matter and sensation, fit into a larger divine gift of capacitation. This book offers a holistic and integrated theory of knowledge that envisions one all-encompassing divine pedagogy that orients toward union with God. This union is experienced fully in the eschaton, but it breaks into time through the sacraments of the church, and it echoes down through the ordinary modes of knowing we encounter in daily life. Mundane knowledge beckons the knower to become capable of a sublime intelligence: to become capable of union with the divine. This integrative, unitive, and eschatologically oriented vision of knowledge stands in stark contrast to modern and postmodern epistemologies. Sensing the Sacred positions mystagogy as a timely remedy for the “incapacitations” that modernity offers us.

With Dostoyevsky’s Idiot and Aquinas’ Dumb Ox as guides, this book seeks to recover the elemental mystery of the natural law, a law revealed only in wonder. If ethics is to guide us along the way, it must recover its subordination; description must precede prescription. If ethics is to invite us along the way, it cannot lead, either as politburo, or even as public orthodoxy. It cannot be smugly symbolic but must be by way of signage, of directionality, of the open realization that ethical meaning is en route, pointing the way because it is within the way, as only sign, not symbol, can point to the sacramental terminus. The courtesies of dogma and tradition are the road signs and guideposts along the longior via, not themselves the termini. We seek the dialogic heart of the natural law through two seemingly contradictory voices and approaches: St. Thomas Aquinas and his famous five ways, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s holy idiot, Prince Myshkin. It is precisely the apparent miscellany of these selected voices that provide us with a connatural invitation into the natural law as subordinated, as descriptive guide, not as prescriptive leader.
