Ability Machines written by Sky LaRell Anderson and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-02 with Computers categories.

Video games are both physically and cognitively demanding--so what does that mean for those with a disability or mental illness? Though they may seem at odds, Ability Machines illuminates just how vital video games are to understanding our bodies and abilities. In Ability Machines, Sky LaRell Anderson shows us how video games can help us imagine what our abilities mean and how they engage us physically, behaviorally, and cognitively to envision our agency beyond limitations. On the surface, this can mean games provide power fantasies; more profoundly, games can fundamentally reshape cultural and personal understandings of mental health, illness, disability, and accessibility. Video games are indeed ability machines that produce a reimagined state of agency. Featuring a comparative analysis of key video game titles, including Metal Gear Solid V, Wolfenstein II, Celeste, Devil May Cry 5, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Hades, Nier: Automata, and more, Ability Machines tackles larger questions of ability and how our bodies relate to interactive media.

Why Language Matters For Theory Of Mind written by Janet Wilde Astington and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-03-24 with Psychology categories.

"Theory of mind" is the phrase researchers use to refer to children's understanding of people as mental beings, who have beliefs, desires, emotions, and intentions, and whose actions and interactions can be interpreted and explained by taking account of these mental states. The gradual development of children's theory of mind, particularly during the early years, is by now well described in the research literature. What is lacking, however, is a decisive explanation of how children acquire this understanding. Recent research has shown strong relations between children's linguistic abilities and their theory of mind. Yet exactly what role these abilities play is controversial and uncertain. The purpose of this book is to provide a forum for the leading scholars in the field to explore thoroughly the role of language in the development of the theory of mind. This volume will appeal to students and researchers in developmental and cognitive psychology.

Re Mapping Migration And Education written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-04 with Education categories.

At a time of unprecedented human migration, education can serve as critical space for examining how our society is changing and being changed by this global phenomenon. This important and timely book focuses on methodological lenses to study how migration intersects with education. In view of newer methodological propositions such as the reduction of participant/researcher binaries, along with newer technology allowing for mapping various forms of data, the authors in this volume question the very legitimacy of traditional methods and attempt here to expose power relations and researcher assumptions that may hinder most methodological processes. Authors raise innovative questions, blur disciplinary lines, and reinforce voice and agentry of those who may have been silenced or rendered invisible in the past. Contributors are: Gladys Akom Ankobrey, Sarah Anschütz, Amy Argenal, Anna Becker, Jordan Corson, Courtney Douglass, Edmund T. Hamann, Belinda Hernandez Arriaga, Iram Khawaja, Jamie Lew, Cathryn Magno, Valentina Mazzucato, Timothy Monreal, Laura J. The Closed Society And Its Ligatures A Critique Using The Example Of Landscape written by Olaf Kühne and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-18 with Social Science categories.

In the face of great challenges, utopian thinking is currently in vogue. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book 'Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde' (The Open Society and its Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism. In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf's understanding of ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are capable of enabling life chances, the latter tend to limit them. Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side) consequences of various closed societies and how ill-suited they are for dealing with current challenges.
