Excerpt from The Metaphysic of Experience, Vol. 4 of 4 Accordingly, the cardinal and ultimate distinc tion between the domains of Logic and Ethic, as practical sciences, is this, that Logic speaks of the ways in which we must think, if we would avoid error in thinking; Ethic of the way in which we must choose, if we would avoid blame in choosing; both thinking and choosing being necessities of our nature. And not only are both of them necessities of our nature, but they are inseparable one from the other it is only by abstraction that they can be sundered. When we call the domain of Logic thought or reasoning, and that of Ethic practice or conduct, we do so only by conceiving thought as perpetually choosing a particular end, namely, knowledge or truth of fact, prior to com paring and judging facts, and practice as per petually comparing the preferabilities of alterna tive actions, prior to the action Of choosing between them. NO thought is possible without volition, and no volition possible without thought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Instinct and Experience In the summer of 1910 a symposium on the subject of Instinct and Intelligence was held in London at a joint meeting of the Aristotelian and British Psychological Societies and of the Mind Association. Considerable interest in the discussion was shown both in the room in which we met and beyond its walls. The papers then taken as read, and subsequently published in the "British Journal of Psychology," disclose not a little divergence in the sense in which the terms instinctive and intelligent are used, an underlying divergence in the principles on which the proffered interpretations are based, and indications, more or less clear, of yet deeper-seated differences of philosophical foundation. The questions at issue seem to open out live problems, and problems of wide range. Being under promise to write a short work on some aspect of genetic psychology I thought I might do some service by expanding my own contribution to the symposium, by bringing it into relation with the views expressed by other contributors, by following up the subject in further detail, and especially by giving something like definite form to the doctrine of experience, which has, of late years, been taking shape in my mind, under influences too numerous to admit of detailed citation. Excerpt from The Metaphysic of Experience, Vol. 2 of 4 The analysis of Book I. has shown us the Bookii. nature of the experiences, out of which our conception of a real world of persons and things, slice actions and events, is framed, and by reference to heofue which, as evidence at any time available, its truth is tested. It has disclosed to us a world, or objective panorama, of real objects thought of, consisting of two classes of real existents, briefly named Matter and Existent Consciousness, in contrast to the objective thought, or (psychologically) subjective panorama, by which we picture or think of it. And within the former, or world of real existents, it has farther revealed the distinction which separates existents which are both real conditions and conditionates from existents which are real conditionates only. The common-sense conception of the universe in which we live, speaking of it broadly or in its main outlines, is thereby at once explained and justified. And the task which lies next before us is to follow up the conception of the world of real conditions, the realities of the real panorama, which we have obtained by this analysis, and see how it has been and is now being treated by those who have taken it as their datum. Excerpt from Experience: A Chapter of Prolegomena Philosophy needs no Prolegomena. Experience, the experience of common life, is its beginning. And the more directly it can go back to this common ground of fact from which all philosophies draw their life, the better its chance of arriving at the universal fact which is the truth. But philosophy now finds the testimony of experience discredited. Its endeavour is futile, unless the credit of its source is re-established. The current doctrine taught is that whatever else experience may afford to us, it cannot give us the knowledge of reality. The purpose, then, of this Chapter of Prolegomena is to deal with this initial obstacle to the progress of philosophy, the doctrine that we cannot know. Excerpt from Avenarius and the Standpoint of Pure Experience, Vol. 10 This effort to appreciate experience in an undistorted way, to take it as it comes, not checking the coming by asking metaphysical questions, but simply trying to see what comes, is what concerns the first section of the essay. As the duty of squaring myself with idealism looms in the background, it is the independent outer world aspect of experience that interests me most. The thesis of my first section is that naive realism is a perfectly correct description of experience as such, but that this does not make it a true meta physical theory of existence. It may be true and it may not. As experience we have the world with all its empirical detail. It interests us and we want to know about it. We can feel two kinds of curiosity about the world. We can, on the one hand, wish to become better and better acquainted with its empirical character, or we can conceive it as a whole and ask what is the cause or ground or nature of the whole in view of which we shall interpret and comprehend the parts that come within our ken. The first type of interest desires description of experience, the second desires an ex planation of experience, and the second and third sections of the paper are entitled, respectively, 'the Description of Experience' and 'the Explanation of Experience.'
